im quite curious whats the hole in the reflector for?

 

I dont think iv seen/noticed that before, is it for some sort of side light to shine through?

Yeah, the sidelight is a separate little thing which piggybacks on the connector.

I noticed there looks to be holes on each side, I wonder how much light gets lost through the unused hole...
