That 19's gone  straight on my watch list. Probably rocket over my meagre budget, though.

Really? That's a pain. Admittedly it's a very loose plan for next year which I've yet to do any research into at all but that would be a bit of a bummer.

Hmm...http://www.understandingitaly.com/living-content/motoring.html- yep, can't be done. Oh well, assuming it's do-able elsewhere I will just have to cross the border by train or something and pick one up in a neighbouring country, Austria, France or even Switzerland perhaps. I know France would be fine.

It's far from impossible, but it's a bit more complicated than most places in Europe. This website is about transfer of ownership within Italy. If you're exporting a car it's not quite as strenuous or expensive. The main stumbling block, as explained here, is that until registration is transferred the previous owner is legally responsible for all taxes etc relating to the car. Hence many private sellers are unwilling to flog to a foreigner in case you bugger off without completing the necessary paperwork and leave them taxing their shitty Fiat Ritmo for the rest of time or whatever. I also think there is some complicated thing about returning the old number plates (so you can't just drive home, as it will technically be unregistered). Basically it's a load of hassle and you want a resident on the ground to do all this for you and save you a bit of red tape. If you are really 100% serious I know somebody who does this almost full time who would probably take care of it for you, but his fee is probably not insignificant either...
