Berlingo 1.9d 2005 poor fuel economy

Definitely check the valve clearances, if the glowplugs are good it is one of the most likely causes of difficult smoky starting. If the engine has previously overheated (but not to the point of getting cooked) they close up.

OK... Updateum...

I thought I would check the 'clicking' valve on the fuel pump and couldn't her it when I turned the ignition  ( bonnet up ) so I gave the cables a wiggle and the clicking became very noticeable so I will need to check dodgy connections but the battery was having a Winter rest so I had to take it off and chuck it on a charger for a couple of days. When I put the battery back on the van started ok with little smoke, smoke on revving but not on starting. The problem is, I don't know if this change is because of the ( Potentially ) dodgy valve or the ECU being reset because the battery was disconnected for so long in -5 Deg C ?? Anyway went to work today and van went / started as expected.. Fuel consumption still high though..

I want to discount the easy stuff before I start rechecking timing and valves again..

I’ve dug the DELPHI DPCN manual out and you can see ECU pin designation and the wiring diagram for the Advance Valve. It is fed voltage from the double relay and has a switched ground through the ECU at pin F4 (CLM) by PWM signal (or duty cycle). Good luck with the diagnosis.

Sorry if this is a granny / eggs interface but how are you checking the fuel use ? Proper brim to brim test ?

tommotech; thanks for your time, I will use this to check the valve etc..

twosmoke300; Yes I write down the miles covered every time I fill the van up then average out over 3 or 4 fill ups as there are a couple of filling stations around here where the forecourt slopes and you can't get a 'proper' fill but also I watch when I fill up, I always fill up when the needle touches the half tank. What gives it away though is if I fill up at the halfway and it costs around £30 I could have driven anything between 130 and 260 miles which is the bit that worries me, I don't hang onto gears, always try to change at around 3k revs and try to keep it smooth if I can.. Not anally you understand but just because I don't want to break my van...
