Battery charger at fault or knackered battery?

Recommended Posts

Not used the Jeep for a while, and did not have enough juice to start earlier.

Battery off, and now on charge... However

Battery charger is charging for a few seconds, tripping out, resetting and then charging again for a few seconds.

Could it be the battery is knackered or as I think time to get a new charger.

Cheers

Battery voltage is too low, connect another battery in parallel with it and charge them both for a few hours.

what battery charger do you have?

I invested in a optimate a few years ago and I've never looked back.

Do you have a long thin piece of wire, maybe a roll of bell wire?   Your battery is taking more current than the charger is rated for so it trips out. Convert your charger into a "smart charger" which will not over-current trip. At highish current the long thin wire's resistance will drop some of the voltage and get warm, being long and thin the heat will dissipate (ie don't leave it on the reel) - as the battery charges the current will decrease so the voltage drop over the thin wire will decrease till eventually the voltage at the battery is the same as the voltage at the charger.
