Right I've found the running issue at last.

 

The secondary fuel pump is dead. Even putting 12v direct to it (well direct to the connector on the tank) results in no activity, doing the same to the primary pump produces pumping noises. This also explains the occasional 'restricted performance' warning which occurs when the fuel pressure drops or the ECU notices the pump failure.

 

Replacement is a tank out job, so I might ask the specialist to do it next week as I don't fancy it. The pump itself is £78 from SNG Barrett so I reckon £150 fitted?

Hooray to finding the fault, it should go much better with the new pump in! Have you considered replacing both pumps at the same time and maybe suggesting to whoever does the job having a good look at any rubber lines in the tank?

I've thought about that aye. I'll speak to Chris at the garage when I drop it off and ask him to double check the pipes after your issues. He seems to know his stuff damn well to chat too so I'll accept his advice.

The tank is in the boot and the pumps are in the tank, so yes. Access is via a hole in the top of the tank, I could butcher the parcel shelf to get in but that seems to barbaric for this car.

 

TBH it doesn't look that difficult but my back hates leaning forwards for too long so it'd be difficult for me.

I reckon that by the time I'd spent 20 minutes under the car trying to undo rusty fixings and attempting to separate fuel lines I'd probably be ready to set fire to the whole thing.

Be careful, you could get arrested for that.

 

Fuel pumps on most moderns are cooled by the liquid fuel. Hence also why running the tank very low too often will shorten a pump's life.

It's common on injected cars to get the higher pressures required and immersing the pump in the fuel stops the pump overheating.

Has that university degree dolt that came up with the terminally daft idea putting a pump inside a tank been given two litres of petrol to drink yet?

Has he been set on fire afterwards?

Well I posted what I've found on a XJR owners group on FB & they all assure me I'm wrong. Faulty fuel pumps are never anything to do with an engine acting like it's run out of fuel according to them. The concept that one pump is dead & the other might be dying/isn't delivering enough fuel as it's worn/partly blocked/ has knackered pipework is a concept they can't appear to understand.

I think in the end you just have to take the attitude that it’s your car, your working on it, not the Internet. Being methodical and using logic will solve the problem in the end. Even though there are plenty of threads out there on many a forum regarding these cars, it doesn’t mean they have covered everything. When I was trying to find the fault on the turquoise XJR in the end it wasn’t the Internet that provided the answer, it was sheer working it all out one step at a time. Sure some posts on forums gave me some ideas and references but that’s about it.

Nothing really to report except as I drove back from Newcastle this ticked over 1,100miles in my ownership today at an average of 18.5mpg since I got it according to the dash. I refuse to add up the fuel costs as I don't want to know.
