I had a 'Wimpy' at Watford Gap Services about 2 years ago. UNasked, A wholemeal bun was given with the burger and fries. Didn't mind, but seemed strange.

There used to be an American themed burger joint in Hull with a pink Corvette (IIRC) on the roof. Long since gone, and I never got a picture.

There are still Wimpys about, rare in towns now, mainly in service stations. Nearest one to me is in Littlehampton.

Back to Hitchin, I'm sure it had 2 at one time until the one on the High street became Burger King. AFAIK the one on Sun street remains though to this day. I had my 6th birthday party in the high street Wimpy  There was a guy dressed in a giant Mr Wimpy costume!

Pog, I preferred 'Zodiac Toys' which was in the same arcade but down the other end towards the market. My favourite past time however was trawling the Friday market toy stalls & even more the small saturday market tucked up behind the back of the other arcade near the corn exchange for diecast models! Those were the days... :D

I think I now remember seeing Sainsburys right up near the park by Bancroft having seen it on subsequent visits.

I remember the original Safeway becoming Wilkinsons, that happened a long time ago, likewise the big Safeway opened a long time ago too on the site of the old hospital. Hitchin only seems to have the private Pinehill hospital now. I assumed it had now become Morrisons as has happened everywhere else.

Hammy, what a small world it is eh?! Once upon a time, virtually everyone I knew was based around London & the home counties. My dad & his side grew up around Barnet, my mum & her family Cheshunt, my middle sister was born in Lister hospital Stevenage, my other one was born in St Thomas' London & still got relatives from both sides in Northolt, Golders Green, Bedford & Bassingbourne. My nan lived in Barnet up until 96 when she moved to Gloucestershire & my gran lived in Letchworth until she died in 01. Other relatives lived in Mychett (not sure of spelling) in Surrey until they also moved to Gloucestershire in 89.

We're all still in touch with friends from Hitchin, only a couple of months ago I was visited by a friend from Hitchin who I hadn't seen for 15 yrs, got back in touch via Facebook!

Delay in responding, been in autoshiteland (Malta - pics to follow). I remember going to a birthday party at the Wimpy in Hitchin too, and we all hid from Mr Wimpy under the seats. That can't have been long before Burger King took over that one.

My favourite shop in Hitchin was the little old magazine and transport book shop near Simmonds Bakers on Church Road because they used to sell old books and railway mags for 10p.

I do also remember being taken there by one of those "aunts" who wasnt really an aunt but had been trusted to look after me whilst my parents were away at a Christmas works function. She treated me to a chunky Matchbox Sierra Cosworth (in white) which was pride of my collection until I tried to make it a convertible with a saw in a vice.

Malta eh? Can't wait to see if we made the same spots, whereabouts did you go? I'm returning in November for the 3rd time in just over a year. This time last year we were shortly heading off for my first visit (and I still haven't posted up everything I saw, I'm not sure I ever will! Not even started on the spots from my 2nd trip last November yet...).I remember BK opening in place of Wimpy, must have been about 1989/90 as I had my 6th birthday party at that Wimpy in Dec 88. Was that when Burger King first arrived on these shores? I remember not having heard of them before & it seemed like a new fad at the time.....20 yrs later! Was that a Matchbox Superkings RS500? I bought that one but much later in life from a Swapmeet, I remember it when it came out though, thought it was a cool model but took me a long time to end up with one!I forgot the out & out best shop in Hitchin (apart from the cool Woolies which had a rare 'tea bar'), it was the model shop on Sun Street, can't remember what it was called but even just looking in the window was cool. On my most recent trips, (not all that recent) I observed that the shop in a lesser form had move across the square to the road that runs parallel with Sun Street, can't remember the name but it had/has Brookers DIY shop on it & in the old days, a cobblers & Perfect Pizza, both with working animated dummies in the window (not the staff) :) Was Bucklersbury or something like that?

I see the slight similarity to an R20 but unfortunately it's a wedge :)

We stayed in Bugibba not more than 5 mins walk from the car museum (completely by chance) and were using the buses to get about. I've got some on board video of some howling AEC diesel thrash that I will put on You Tube at some point. Going there was like being 5 years old again but with a camera. I wish I had the dosh to go back and might even try early next year out of season when its a bit cheaper to do so. The rarest thing I saw was a Subaru estate which must have been late 60's or early 70's at best, looked in very good condition but didn't get chance to snap it. I think it was the RS500, it was white with UK plates. I remember being well chuffed when I got it from Woolies because my friend had the XR4i and this was better! The Texaco RS500 was king of the playground racing cars at my school, along with a Nascar in Duckhams colours.

Oi!It's not just any Wedge, but a Denim blue 2200HLS. After the Wolseley, it's the Wedge Grail.
