The original crash protection on these GM perimeter frame cars was lousy.

They appear substantial but fold up very quickly.

It’s the GM X frame. Well known to be quite weak and they suffer from rust issues too. They’re fine as ‘a car’ but crash protection wasn’t a strong point! 
One variant of an X frame car (can’t remember what it was) was raced at Arena Essex some years ago at the Firecracker meeting and it didn’t last long either! Beautiful looking cars though!

Saying that, one can’t be too hard on poor old GM.

This was the same era Ford were hard at work designing fuel tanks that could get crushed and split open in accidents creating fireballs! Thank god the lawsuit’s were cheaper to pay for than redesigning the cars though otherwise the Pinto’s good looks could have been ruined!😁
