What could possibly go wrong?

Afternoon all,

This has been sitting on Auto trader for a little while now:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201706026038683?advertising-location=at_cars&model=XJ&onesearchad=New&onesearchad=Nearly%20New&onesearchad=Used&make=JAGUAR&radius=1501&price-to=1000&postcode=ox201qz&sort=sponsored&page=1

And it looks far too good to be true. Despite this a little niggling voice in the back of my head wants me to make an insultingly low offer on it.

This is obviously a bad idea, so I was hoping that you chaps on here would know all of the horrendous, financially crippling things that go wrong with these and can convince me it's an awful idea?

Ta,

The lack of MoT and use of "Bit of a project" coming from a dealer, scare me a great deal...

A little while?

That was on Autotrader in early August when I was looking for a replacement for my Volvo...

I'd be going in with a cheeky offer £500 below asking price and seeing how far you get thrown off the premises. :-D

TBH it doesn't look too bad, though I don't actually know how hard it would be to do the suspension bush. You do have to wonder why they haven't done it themselves.

Obviously if it has rust holes in the floor, the rust will most likely be progressing pretty well everywhere else.

Mechanically they are pretty strong, 122k is nothing for the engine.

It's probably worth the money, but £650 is better. It's clearly not complete rubbish going on the pics and piss ant MOT fails.

Have you bought it yet?

4.0 X300 Sovereign. Perfect spec if you ask me, much better than those V8s and Sports ones.

It does look quite good. Which doesn't count for that much. Fine, make a low offer but the difference between figures is nil compared what it will cost to run so the only questions are do you want itand can you cope with it.

Sorry slightly ranting mood.

There’s one near me for sale, £500, tested but no headlining and it needs ‘tlc’ But it’s got MOT till feb. By my estimations you wouldn’t be seeing another test again in Feb without ££££ but what a way to smoke through winter. Then in Feb see half of it back minimum at the breakers. I can think of worse ways to piss £250 away.

Thank you all for your responses - you've only made me want it more! Once Mr Moog's roffle for the lovely Saab is over, and I'm sure I haven't one, this may well be on the cards as a way of hemorrhaging cash over the winter

No MOT but at least it does come with 12 months AA cover.

It doesn't seem a lot of money but a dealer not wanting to MOT a car would slightly concern me, the fail sheet doesn't seem too bad at all? Fairly routine stuff for a 20 year old car.

Ask for a quote on Moto Novo Finance.

How can anything not being a V12 possibly be better than a V8?

Are you really sure you have thought this through all the way?

That AA cover isn’t worth jack shit. Any garage worth their salt will test it if it’s got less than 6 months to go.

Edit... it failed 2 months ago on the A frame bushes. Plus it’s sat a few months so there’s a brake strip down to factor in. So assuming you DIY it it’s a £1000 car.

Can’t really understand the point when a good running one with test is £6-700.

A real Jaaaaaaaaag should be a straight 6 or a V12.

V8s have no place in such a refined automobile.

Then again, they are dealers and only interested in margins, whats it worth with a new ticket?  If its still south side of a grand then I can understand them not wanted to spend money on it.

Looks nice though, good luck, go and take a look, take a monkey with you, and a ton as back up, if they still say no don't worry, leave your number they'll call you in a couple of days.

Hmm anyone in the motortrade will have access to an under the arches type place that does MOTs. Given it failed the test a few months ago, you’d stick some new bushes on and sell it for what they’re asking. Instead it’s sat for some time, so I’d say you’ve the likelihood of it wanting work this test round on the brakes, autos are particularly bad on handbrakes etc being seized up at the test cause people tend to leave them in Park.

Yes quite right ^^ and the fact its sat there for a while, other punters must have looked at it and walked away.

Worth a view but I'd err on the side of caution, if you don't mind dealing with dealers.
