VW Sharan cambelt or scambelt?

We picked up this Sharavan (as the old man calls it) on 1st September 2016 after a rushed purchase before going on holiday and leaving them to do the cambelt, waterpump, service and mot before we picked it up after the holiday. While servicing her last month ready for our holiday I noticed this:

So I ignored it and decided we could sort it after the holiday as we were only going to be doing about 300 miles in the car. 2000 miles later in this last month of family life I buy these bits and get started on the cambelt and waterpump change that was only done about 12000 miles and 2 years ago.

The residue of coolant I saw when servicing it worried me and led me wonder if they really did the cambelt and waterpump or just took my money.

And with lower pulley removed it looks a bit moist in there.

Lower cover off and that doesn't look like a newish waterpump and the coolant loss and contamination of the cambelt looks worse now...

Looks grubby, but it could be down to poor installation (water pump seal damaged or incorrectly fitted).

Are there any markings on the waterpump/tensioner and belt, i.e. manufacturer or date stamp/code ?

If it was mine I would do the job again for peace of mind. But it isn't and I don't have to...

Just saying like.

PD's are nice and easy to change the belt and pump on, easier than the ve motor as there is no pump to time up. Atleast it doesn't have the horrible hydraulic tensioner like the earlier PD's. Looking closer at the pics the pump and belt looks a bit older than 12k, but maybe I am wrong.

Well I think this waterpump was never replaced but the cambelt was so they did half the job I payed for.

Pump looked OK when they got to it so their margin on the job went up on the basis by the time it leaks it will be two years down the road.

Mind you, last two K Series belts I did, pump looked and felt ok, one pump is still going and the other pump failed shortly after, so it is a 50/50 even if you phone a friend.

The waterpump does not have plastic impeller so isn't original and does not feel bad and seems to have had the leak from its shaft seal.

Had to dig out loads of crud to remove the cambelt from the crankshaft pulley as it was holding it in place.

Don't dismiss the chance of a cheapo Chinese water pump.

You're right to replace it and might as well do the belt as well.
