MGFs

Fatha Sierra is looking at one at weekend and he wants me to have a browse at it. Apart from HGF and piss wet through floors I've not had any dealings with these. Any pointers. An oldish chap has had it, its a W plate and its supposedly had the uprated gasket fitted and load if other work. Looks like new from what I'm told, I think its on at a grand but there's movement in that. Seen a few at £6-700 but body a bit scruffy on them.

They rust around the front wings (leading edge and rear corner) and the side air intakes.

Rear windows are plastic and will crack if not treated properly - you're meant to unzip them before dropping the hood ideally or some people put a rolled up towel in the fold to stop them splitting.

I paid £70 for a new window section and fitted it myself, there's a row of pop rivets along the bottom (get proper ones, they're longer than normal)

Parts are plentiful, there's people on eBay with sheds full of panels and trim.

They're a massive laugh to drive when looked after, they do suffer when on cheapo tyres.

This uprated HG then is this likely to be the multilayered job? Does that sort the problem out indefinitely?

Seen a few at less money but I've said to him if its had the big jobs done and he is planning on keeping it it could be worth paying the extra.

MGFS are awesome, I miss mine :-(

Look for

Rusty front to back coolant pipes.

The front wishbones are a right pain in the arse to change.

Make sure the suspension height is okay. You should be able to get 2 or 3 fingers (depending on fatness of fingers) between the top of the tyre and the wheelarch.

Make sure the floppy top is hole free and see if they have an elastic strap on the frame inside, it makes it so much easier to open and close the top. Not vital but saves a couple of quid getting one. Ask what under floor coolant pipes are fitted, if stainless then all good, if not budget on about 70 quid for a set and fitting is obviously extra.

Cambelts?

Gear change should be fairly smooth, anything really, really clunky or stiff might point to new cables needed.

Check the wiper linkeages are okay.

Ask if it has a 48mm or 52mm throttle body fitted. The 52mm one is better and is fairly easily fitted.

Check underneath for rust. If stainless exhaust is fitted be happy with the noise, they can be a bit OTT at times.

Interior trim isn't the best, make sure it all fits with minimal rattling and check that the windows meet the seals properly as sometimes they need to be adjusted.

Make sure the rad fan kicks in.

What are these like to work on in terms of the engine? It'll probably be muggins that ends up doing work on it.

Posted

there just as easy to work on once you've got the engine cover off than any other car.

its time consuming getting to the engine but all you really need to go in there for is service items.

rust in the sills is the biggest bodywork issue but it all depends on how the car has been used/stored and as said parts supplies are plentiful.

get it bought, check coolant every trip and fit quality tyres, nexen and toyo seem the choice, make sure the ride height is spot on as it really screws up the ride and handling.

join a club or a forum, www.the-t-bar.com the mgf register and mg rover forums are the prominent ones and have a wealth of knowledge and advice.

if security is a problem then a hard top is desirable, if not then they are a waste of time.

It would be garaged yes. He lives in the back o beyond so security isn't an issue. The farmers have honesty boxes at the side of the road to pay for eggs put it that way.

Had a vvc on an R-plate a while back which was a real laugh with go-kart like handling. Suspension is the weak point unlike the TF's because once the displacers lose their hydragas charge the ride height can lower and suspension will become extremely firm leading to a harsh ride.

The system can be recharged which should sort this out. However, on mine even after having the system recharged the ride was still too firm over even the slightest bump.

This can be caused by nitrogen depletion inside the displacer which can only be rectified by having the unit sent away and having a schrader valve welded to the unit and having the nitrogen recharged. There are companies on ebay that will do this for around £250.

Best thing to do would be take the car for a drive and if the suspension rattles your teeth then suspension needs attention. Ride height is important on these so check Web link below for details

GET IT BORT!!

I'm just the one looking it over. My old man wants to buy it. I'm still on the prowl for a suitably shit Mondeo.
