Turns out that not all Polish people drive TDi Passats. Here’s the proof.

Looks like a Chrysler Newport. 1965-ish

After Ed worked his magic, the Syrena was taken to Poland where it was repaired properly, then it featured in a Polish car repair show, then it was parked up in a museum from where its current owner bought it and brought it back to the UK.

You should have seen the blue smoke belching out of its exhaust when the little two stroke motor was revved up. Makes a VW TDi look clean!

The Mercedes with the mock RAF fighter paint job, squadron code RF D

Great show with a great atmosphere in a great location with a lot of great cars. Great!

RF was the code for No. 303 ("Kościuszko") Polish Fighter Squadron (note the Polish 'roundel' (squarel?) on the front wing). It was not only the highest scoring of the Hurricane squadrons during the Battle of Britain, but it had the highest ratio of enemy aircraft destroyed to their own lost. After the Battle of Britain 303 squadron carried on in various fighter roles with great success.

The irony is that it's a German car, and worse a product of Daimler-Benz, which has been painted in these colours. The main Luftwaffe fighters during the Battle of Britain were the Messerschmit 109 and 110 both powered by Daimler-Benz engines. It would have been far more appropriate if a Rolls-Royce had been painted up in these colours (or either a Ford of Britain product, Ford made some of the Merlin engines, or an Austin - who built many Hurricanes during the war).

The W124 with roundels is evidence that we live in a round world.
