Timing chain woes on an old Ford

Recommended Posts

The timing chain on my MK3 Zodiac has been making a bit of a rattling noise for a while now, I didn’t fancy doing the job myselt in case I cocked it up so a mechanic pal of mine who is well used to old motors did the job last week.

All has been well for a few days with a very silent smooth running engine but today there is an unpleasant noise from the front of the engine. Could it be that the sprockets are well worn too and these have now buggered the new timing chain? This is what I’m thinking has happened, It’s a long shot but does anyone on here have some decent used replacement sprockets for these Ford straight six engines?

Does it have fibre timing gears?

I thought fibre timing gears were only used on gear-driven camshaft setups?  Might be completely wrong mind.

Hi, The straight six in the mk3 Zephyr/Zodiac had a chain and sprockets, the fibre gears were used in the Essex V4 and V6 in the mk4.  It sound like the tensioner might have failed.

I thought you always replaced the chain & sprockets together due to wear?

That's what I thought, replace all as a unit. Have done that with old Kent engined Fiestas before.

It's like replacing a motorcycle chain with a new one on old/worn sprockets, it'll work but wear out fast and be inclined to be noisy.

I was wondering how old a Ford must be to have a timing chain.

Mk1 ka were all chains ! Even the later duratoss engine
