Absolutely unbelievable, yet sadly true: A working, running 1954/5 Riley RM has been traded in for £2000 as scrappage at a BMW dealer in the Huddersfield area. It's not often that I feel like meting out a kicking, but the stupid cunt who weighed this in needs a good toeing.

Who's the bad guy here though, the government, the dealer, or the moron who actually trades it in against a new BM? I strongly suspect that an MOT'd usable RM is worth more than 2 grand anyway.Sadly we cant see that link as you need to be a member to check it.

Here's the car in question. Apparently it's quite ropey, but even so: Never underestimate the stupidity of the Public.

I would doubt it will be cubed - someone somewhere will have the nous to save it.

Ridiculous but you'd have to think that the bad guy is the owner who traded it in. Surely if he wanted rid and needed as much cash back from it as possible then sell the plate off and the the car itself must be worth a reasonable amount?

 

Whilst I don't think the Riley can ever return to the road again hopefully it could make someone a good parts donor.

I've had some thought on this and to be honest I'm surprised we haven't heard more tales of stuff like this - the "proper" classic car world has some pretty strange characters amongst its ranks. I can just imagine some grumpy old bloke deciding to cash the Riley in just so no one else could have it.

The daft thing is that as an RM has an ash body it's made up of renewable materials to a large degree so is actually a very carbon neutral vehicle!It's very bizarre that someone would scrap that; I really never thought to see cars as old being scrappaged. Could it have been left to relatives who've had it kicking about for a while and not known what to do with it? Whatever, it's a bloody waste indeed

Tell him to take a picture of it being crushed after he's chopped it in. The kind of moron who makes statements like his deserves to be roundly ignored.He reminds me of those tosspots on eBay who threaten to remove the listing if no-one starts bidding on it. Bollocks to him, it's his loss and he can play God if he wants to but I hope no-one takes him up and he does end up chopping it in to be quite honest.

It`s funny really, but much as I don`t like the idea of an Imp or anything interesting meeting an unnecessary end, that is exactly how I feel about things like this, I sort of hope they end up going through with it. Although to be fair to this particular individual, at least his proposal is not as unreasonable as the ones where the owner insists on fifty quid short of the full 2 grand, so he can have another bite of the cherry when he gets his £1000 off without the car (Well, they would if anyone actually bought any of this £500 at the most stuff.

Anyone who decides to scrap a car that nice didn't deserve to have it in the first place. Let the miserable bastard rot in his shiny new dinky toy. Rant aside, I do wonder if a lot of these are being traded in by the young offspring of some old giffer whose died/given up driving. I cannot for the life of me understand why someone would keep a real classic like that roadworthy (which takes effort and care) and just trade it in as soon as 'a good deal' comes along. Surely the very act of owning an old car means you attribute some value to it, it's not like a P plate Escort with 200,000 miles. Either that, or some people are just batshit crazy.
