A Bad Morning on the Driveway

A slot type screw will always cam out when you apply any sort of torque. On thick bolts like this an impact is usually better as it gives a hammer effect, something like a breaker all to often causes a shear due to the continual high force used on it. Like Rev said, winding it in and out and blasting it with releasing fluid helps.

Nobody likes to admit defeat, but for sake of a few quid I'd let the garage tackle that, stuff like this is infinitely easier on a ramp than laid on your back at a funny angle drilling for what will be hours.

hours? if its taking hours, you need to sharpen your drill bit. Hes not needing to bore a 30mm hole into a block of titanium..its less then ten minutes work with a couple of drill bits and a battery drill.

Not if they're Halfords cobalt ones. They won't drill through shit.

You need to change your diet. :-D

Hmm, I’m quite impressed by the number of replies now. The consensus here clearly is that there is no consensus, but that’s part of the fun. There is one mechanic local who might do the job but it’s very difficult to get hold of him. There is another, but every time I use them the car comes back very slightly unfinished. I might try and get something done Wednesday when I have a day off. Yes indeed if anyone near Pocklington has a welder, I would happily pay £20 to get the bolt extracted!

Well, I bailed out on this one completely and let a local mechanic do the job. What a job it was too! Apparently easyouts and drillbits were muched through before the section had to be cut out and replaced. The bolt on the other side did come out without snapping amazingly, but it was properly seized too. I must complement on the quality of the repair. A brand new bolt slotted into the replaced captive section like a glove, quite impressive. At least the Clio is back on the road saving us fuel. All in all, what a mess.

Definitely going to let the same mechanic take care of extracting a snapped exhaust manifold stud on my XJ40!

No fucking chance you'd have done that in an hour and half with a cordless and a medley of drill bits.

Job jobbed anyway.

Indeed. And it really is quite a neat job what has been done, so I'm quite ok with it.
