Clutch question

I've got a judder coming from the clutch when its under load, that's to say when I change down in 2nd or 3rd. Doesn't slip or bite high/low. My thoughts are its glazed at some point through overheating. Any other thoughts about this?

oil leak maybe?

Could be. Thinking on it is damp round the base of the bell housing so could also be the crank end seal. If its that it should limp on for a good while, they rarely just go and leave you stranded. Never need to top the oil up though so can't be leaking in any quantity.

my golf sometimes gets a judder , no signs of oil etc , i find a lairy bit of use /abuse gets rid of it for a good while , just enough to heat it up i guess

Three of my cars have done this. One was just after a new clutch, one was a newish car and the clutch disc of the third is currently on my garage floor with no obvious defects or excessive wear.

 

All went on for years amd thousands of miles like that. Unless the drivetrain is juddering badly at all times, gears are difficult to select or it slips I would just carry on as normal.

Yes that's what I'm doing, running it until it goes. Most likely reason I can think given its giffer previous owner is its got hot at some point and glazed the friction material. So long as it doesn't slip I'll keep plugging away.

This happens, a few racing starts in third gear will probably get rid.

Could be engine mounts or torque reaction bushes (if fitted).

It has a roll restrictor on the front but that feels OK. Usually these are the fluid filled metalastic mounts, these feel OK as well. Usually the diaphragm perishes and the grease fucks off.

Gave it a proper smoking away from the lights tonight and it seems to have cured it for now. Thinking it's possibly the crank end seal. I've had success before with chucking the stop leak stuff in before so I might lob some in.
