Pile of shite XR2.

How can one car look so shiny, and then have a massive great hole in the roof?

Love these, they're spot on for the era when I would shamelessly walk into a dealer and just ask for a brochure to start memorising.

Also, the noise. I look at that badge and I get that unique sound in my head.

There is something just "right" about a red XR2... I would love one now.

[wavy lines signifying a flashback]

When I were a lad of 12 or so, the daughter of the folks next door was 17 going on 18. She was hot and often sunbathed in the back garden in just her undies and sometimes in the buff if her parents werent home. My bedroom overlooked their garden so this fueled many, many sessions of self abuse.

She had a red XR2 which would have been nearly new at the time, and like its owner it was bright and perky.

In the mornings she would get into it, I assume put it in first and hold the clutch down and start it up. As soon as it fired she would rev it up, pop the clutch and rocket off down the street with the front wheels spinning. 12 year old me thought this was probably the most awesome thing in the world. (looking back now, I doubt the car appreciated that!)

Scroll forwards some years and I was in my 20s and working in a dead-end factory job - there was a woman on my shift who was late thirties and in a loveless and possibly abusive marriage to a fat, slovenly cunt of a man who was one of the shift supervisors. She and I regularly became intimate in classy locations like the staff toilets and storage sheds. She had a red XR2, which was getting on a bit by then. Again, it was like its owner....a bit tired, bits had gone droopy and it had some creased panels, but if you knew what you were doing you could still have 40 minutes of great fun with it....

So yeah....my willy likes red XR2s.

Shame you’ve parted with it after so long - hopefully you got a decent return on your purchase price what with the value of these having gone through the roof.

At least the new owner will hopefully get the old girl right again though.

OMG you sold it!! I hate mine but as I'm weird I'll never sell it.

Hope you made a stupid amount of money and that it doesn't get the obligatory lowered, unneeded roll cage and stupid engine.

I agreed on a figure that's towards the upper end of "barn find" condition. I think that fucked sunroof surround has basically knocked a grand off its value but to be fair I'd probably be looking at more than that to sort it properly.

Yeah its a hard thing to let go of, but sometimes you just have to reduce a bit of the excess baggage in your life, and accept that if you don't have much disposable income to throw at something like this, its best to stop kidding yourself that you'll "get round to it one day".

You're me, aren't you? Except circa '84-to '89 it would have been my Dad bringing brochures home for me when buying bits for his Cortina.

I reckon a 950 and an XR2 would make a fine pair of Tenors to sing over a shite orchestra.

Sorry I did it again and pressed delete instead of edit. On the mobile site it never says are you sure. Hang on...

I saved it to my YouTube and then linked it from there with the copy link button.

Need to get my son to film me giving it a bit of throttle pedal for the full exhaust effect but I must agree it is quite an addictive sound!

I passed my test in a Mk 1 XR2 that my (now) wife had. Was a bit meh TBH. Punted it off for the first of MANY Lancia's.

I know the roofs bad but bugger me I wish my inner wings were as good as that. Remind me again why you're selling it!

I haven't driven this anywhere properly for probably a year or more, and have taken a chunky deposit from the buyer, so time to get some value out of the insurance policy before it lapses.

Mini_Craig came along for the drive, he's been in the old nail before but like 3 years ago or something. Mrs_Craig shat herself when she found out after that occasion, seemed less concerned this time. Anyway, not enough red cars in the world these days.

A key objective of the exercise was to visit a few dormant XR2s around the place that I know of. This one is much newer than mine and was still very tidy about ten years ago, I'm sure there's a photo of it on the Channel Island spots thread.

And since you ask, here's a better shot of the Delta HF Turbo.

And another one that I can remember in daily use, this is probably in worse condition, check out how green that passenger seat is!! There was also an early red one like mine at this location a few years back, maybe inside the shed now.

I also passed by a house where a dusty grey one can be seen through a garage window, and am in touch with a lad who owns a late blue example + wants some of my sparez. Plus I'm keen to track down a tidy white one that I shoulda bought when it came up for £1250, which had never lost its original steel wheels! However I ran outa time to go looking for it this weekend.

I love driving this thing and will miss it, clunky as it is compared to moderns. Mega heavy steering (no PAS of course) and the brakes need a good shove, though I reckon the mastaa cylindaa probs wants an overhaul. Gonna try get a few more miles on it before it moves on.

Is Jersey the home of the dieing XR? While I have sod all money I'm always on the look out for bits if any of these ever decide they'd like to go very up a few.

That is unless you know somewhere you can get that window rubber for the quarter light.

Hey Shrimp!! I meant to reply about the quarter light rubber and totally forgot.  Which side were you after?

Only just seen this. It's the drivers one mainly. I think I need both but can't remember and I might even need one or two for the others.

I've badly drawn a red circle round it

Sorry M9, I've just read the 'pile of shite xr2' title, no xr2 on the road is a pile of shite, and I'm not a Ford fanboy either. It's either a Sunday cruiser or if you drive it properly, a coffin on wheels. Awesome cars, and yes, I've had a few XR2!

My XR2 is a pile of shite. Loads spent on the engine and body for it only to overheat for no reason and hit the floor when you go over a bump as the suspension is shit.

That said it's had 13 owners and was very cheap.

13 owners! I crush red bull cans laying in their side in the 635, I'm used to hitting the floor which I've catagorised as normal.

Seems it’s changed hands again after the lad who bought it off me moved back to Geordieshire. I’m told this is a recent photo - looking so much better now the roofs been sorted out and a fresh coat of paint has been applied.
