Buying an LPG vehicle

What are the things to look out for??

Quite fancying a Range Rover vogue 4.4V8 with lpg.

If it starts ok then swaps over to LPG and stays swapped over for as long as you want it to and revs cleanly all the way to the top it's a very good sign

Think again if there is any noticeable difference between the fuels; don't be told that this is normal. Look for an LPG specialist near you that will service the system you have, as any problems might mean a long trip on expensive petrol otherwise...

Tank certification is valid for 10 years, which may be a useful bargaining point but I wouldn't worry about it if the tank(s) looks visibly OK from the outside.

Watch out for a shoddy implementation of the kit under the bonnet too - the quality of install varies from tidy through messy, shitty and dangerous. The coolant circuit may have been interrupted to provide heating for the gas feed - check for coolant loss from the associated pipework.

Running a big car on LPG makes a lot of sense but quite a lot were done because the owner fundamentally couldn’t afford to run a car like that. Hence stuff like tyres will be mismatches of part worns and major routine servicing will have taken a back seat to some kerbside handiwork on a Sunday morning by some people used to changing the oil on a Fiesta.

Tank certification now gone by the wayside as nobody was able to retest...good thing too as one of ours is now 20 years out of test :) just a visual inspection, anything internal should be fine as long as it is still secured to something solid.

LPGA certification not worth the paper it's written on but they've pushed certain insurers into only accepting vehicles with there paperwork.

I just sold my 4.4 Vogue on gas a couple of weeks ago, it was high mileage but cheap!

I had it for 7 or 8 months and really loved it. Went like stink, wafted silently, and managed to squeeze 250 miles out of a £45 tank of gas on a motorway run and not towing. Nearer 200 around Cumbria.

L322s should have the tank in the spare wheel well really. The spare wheel on them then takes up a huge amount of the boot space if you do want to carry it. I believe the suspension compressor needs to be moved to make way for the tank, mine was still under the boot floor but further forwards and boxed in with loads of sponge stuff.

At the front end, a good installation shouldn't be that obvious. The vapouriser will probably be on the nearside of the engine as that's the side the heater hoses go through the bulkhead, and they will be T'd into those. The ECU can fit in next to the main ECUs on the front offside of the engine bay, and the injectors should be hidden under the plastic engine cover. If the cover is missing it's possibly due to the injectors being badly fitted.

Mine's gone to Kent with something like 208k on the clocks, still driving very nicely and wearing its miles well, other than a crusty lower edge on the upper tailgate. From what the buyer said it was getting wrapped black, with window tints and larger wheels. Shame, as I looked for ages for a clean, unchavved one! Mine was converted to gas at a year old when the second owner bought it to do lots and lots of miles, so it certainly wasn't done on the cheap.post-577-0-25924500-1509182610_thumb.jpgpost-577-0-01354000-1509182639_thumb.jpgpost-577-0-94319700-1509182662_thumb.jpgpost-577-0-92013300-1509182687_thumb.jpg
