shite taking you far away

Nothing compared to some contenders in this thread, but my utterly hanging 1997 Disco 300 TDi has taken me to Innsbruck & back each January for the last 5 years. A round trip of 2000 miles each time.

Don't hide your light under a bushel.

I wouldn't take a Disco around the M60, or further away that I can walk home at a pinch.

Innsbruck. Pure heroism.

I WILL tour Australia in the Jag, I swear.

Watch this space.

They did the very first lap of Australia in a car in 1925 with a used 1922 Citroen 5CV that already had clocked 48k km when they bought it.

You are late.

Bill Bryson did that with his mother's old, clapped out Chevette and his book about it is a lot funnier.

I'll look that one out. Thanks

single roadtrip - near 1700 miles in a fortnight to south of France and back on a family holiday

At the time 18 year old Range Rover 3.9 V8

Loaded up with Mrs Thestag, 3 little thestags and loads of shit.

This is on the way home at Riems, rear end is low because of boot loaded with cases of wine

would do again tomorrow

surely more epic'ish though is 123,000 miles in 11 years as a daily driver with just one FTP, no major mechanical work other than bushes, timing chain and transfer box.

*has required certain ferrous oxide remediation

My driving escapades are literally nothing compared to most of you. The Knobmobile recently took us to north Devon and back which is about the furthest I've ever gone away from home in one journey!

I quite like this photograph of the Rover 45 diesel in the Brecons though...

The Brecons were as different as it could get from my commute at the time and it handled it all absolutely perfectly, including what felt like a 1:2 gradient hill-start and some pretty hairy emergency stops when we pottered around a corner to find the local insane farmer in a twenty two million ton combine harvester doing a Richard Burns impression...

We covered 3,912 miles in eight days. The story was eventually published online in three parts.

Great story - I was almost as disappointed to finish reading it as you must have been to return home! I've love to do something like that (with someone who I *really* got on with) but my wife is less keen on road trips than I am, preferring to stay in one area for longer and not wishing to rough it quite as much!

I've done quite a few Euro trips but only mainly to France, making it down to the Med on a couple of occasions in the BX. This was car-camping solo, but with a group of other BX owners.

Usually in the van we do 2-3000 miles in total, including 600 miles this side of the Channel so I suppose that counts. Less suited to covering massive miles quickly though.

The old Focus once did around 1000 miles in a day, on the way home from skiing in 2014. I remember filling with fuel in the early hours of the morning, on the Welsh border and still some way from home. The girl in the petrol station was quite chatty and asked where I was heading at such a time, and was quite taken aback I was about to travel 70 miles in the middle of the night. I didn't tell her I'd just driven from Italy!

I've also been down in the Disco in winter, although not quite as far. That proved surprisingly reliable, with only the linkage for the cruise control failing.

I'm taking my 1988 Renault Master to France and back this week fully loaded with cast iron radiators  - I hope...only 1000 round trip...I hope.

Im up and down between here and Aberdeen reasonably often is older cars. Notably a load of old C15 vans.

This cavalier was a treat....It took me all over southern europe on one trip without a single problem despite being bought for 100 pounds out the auctions a few days prior to departure.
