Long lost family car turns up - what are the chances???!!!!

As that car seems to have been unused for some time there's a good chance that the reg number will become non transferable, something about when all reg No.s were put on computer in the 80s I think, any car not taxed during a certain period scores.I've walked away from buying a couple of times when a vendor has raised the issue of a No. plate value, as to me they have zero value. When I see someone who has paid for a No. I can't help thinking that they probably have to pay for sex as well.Although I would buy 5ukmy8all5, but no more than £20.

True enough......To be honest, if he decided to play silly buggers I would walk away though. It would be fantastic to have the car back but it's enough to know it's still around and I'd leave my details for the next owner to contact me.I shall do everything in my power (and budget) to secure it though in the meantime.

Because it was niggling me I decided to get out of bed and turn on the PC and have a look at a couple of websites. On the good side, because I haven't checked for a long time I missed the car being listed with the DVLA:The enquiry is completeThe vehicle details for NTB 167 are:Date of Liability 01 07 2009Date of First Registration 26 04 1951Year of Manufacture Not AvailableCylinder Capacity (cc) 2522CCCO2 Emissions Not AvailableFuel Type PetrolExport Marker Not ApplicableVehicle Status Licence Not DueVehicle Colour BLACKVehicle Type Approval nullUnfortunately NTB 167 appears for sale (around £1200) on a few "cherished" number sites which is not encouraging. If I'm honest I had expected it anyway but unless I can appeal to this guy's better nature, I can see getting the Daimler back being a non-starter and the car is next to useless to me without the reg number - unfortunately I don't have a photo of my grandad pointing to the chassis plate or engine number  Arse. :evil:I will keep you informed however.

I had a day off today so I went back to see the guy with the Daimler. He was pleasant enough but as I predicted didn't seem particularly interested in my story and his main concern is how much he can get for the reg number on this and all the cars he has in I suspect.

If I want the car complete with number it'll cost me £2.5k. Thanks, but no thanks. It's solid enough and has had a fair bit of work done but it doesn't run apparently so sentimental value or not, I ain't paying that much for it.

I have left my details for the potential new owner but I'm extremely glad I spotted the car whilst it still wears its proper identity or I'd never have known it was this car. The car is clearly not roadworthy, yet appears to be licensed and the number is available for transfer - I'll let you draw your own conclusions about that one...

If anyone wins the lottery over the next few weeks and is feeling benevolent, you know where to find me!

Here's a couple more from the family album:

Oh well. Hopefully no-one wants NTB 167 on their BMW X5 and the seller contacts you later with a realistic price in mind.

Just cos a number is 'valued' at a certain price, it doesn't mean it will sell, particularly in today current financial climate. Let the car and the number sit with him a while, and hope he gets back to you.

Times are tough, offer him £1500 and see what happens.

Surely he would have to MOT and tax it before he could transfer it anyhow?

At the time the thread was made, it was taxed (until July 2009, the car was spotted in May). And whilst unroadworthy, it's not unheard of for cherished number dealers to 'obtain' an MoT on a car to transfer the plate off, and then scrap the car. MoT tester knocks one out for a cut of the plate profit, and when it's transferred the car is crushed to avoid any comeback on why a rotten car has a years test on it.

I have to confess I forgot about it a bit until now  To be honest, I really can't do anything about it and if I try I know I'll just end up in a right mess and get extremely wound up!! As I say, it was fantastic to know the car is still around. Might go and see if it's still there out of curiosity though...

Glad to hear you didn't pay silly money for it despite the sentimental value. I've been looking for my dad's old volvo (avatar pic) but no joy- last taxed in '95 so probably long gone. But judging by your story, I live in hope it might turn up!
