thoughts on this sudden oil leak

right so i did a freshen up on the polo engine last year , lots of new parts , bearings rings etc and decided to use cheap no name oil to run it in

i did 1000 miles on cheapo oil (2 changes ) and it was all dry and no leaks etc

upon 1000 miles i changed to "good" stuff , halfords own brand semi iirc  and within a few miles its pissing out one of the gaskets - so coincidence or is the better oil making more pressure and highlighted a shit gasket , or its like piss and just leaks even though its the same grade as before

Coincidence; it could be any number of things, a flaw in the gasket material, imperfection in the gasket face, poor gasket face design, improper torqueing of the fasteners or just bad luck, its just taken until now to show up. Have you celebrated the end of running in with an italian tune-up? That might have tipped the balance.

no havent gone mad sinse the oil change , been using it fairly briskly anyway

just seems bogus that it i took it out the garage and the floor was spotless...change the oil and 50 miles later its lashing out

swapped the gasket over anyway...will see what happens , id imagine halfords oil is trusty enough to use

Have you checked the crankcase breathers? Could be over pressurising causing the seals to piss out.

If not stick some thicker oil in and see what happens

In the old days we had a choice of Castrol GTX or Duckhams 20/50. Life was simple and I don't need all this confusion over oils just when I am getting to the age where I am generally confused anyway. Why are there different oils for cars with and without turbos FFS? Is it like painkillers where they are all the same just in different packaging?

Rant over, sorry for the thread Hijack.

I think SWF has answered your question anyway :)

Where is it actually leaking?

And never use anything thicker than what the manufacturer's recommendation is, especially on a fresh engine.

Just bad luck I think; I don't think semi sympathetic makes a great deal of difference to viscosity at high temperatures. What engine does it have?

I was going to suggest trying a Corn Flake box.
