Service History

If the car's old enough to be a 'Shiter trigger's-broom then I personally couldn't care less. I've seen people who keep old tax discs or receipts for things like oil-filters and wiper blades from 1991, or invoices for a front brakes rebuild in 2000. I'd just declutter and bin the lot apart from maybe something like an original sales invoice or details of major work.

Ownership history can be interesting though, and sometimes obscure personal co-incidental links to a particular car can turn up.

Much more interesting is period pics from when the car was newer but that's drifting away from this thread.

if its lasted long enough to be a shitter then someones took some care of it somewhere along the way

stamped service books mean nothing , ive worked at main dealers and seen the salesmen stamp up blank books

Most times a full service book is an indication some gimp with a stamp set has done an oil change.

Very few cars that I get to service have had them done "properly" when done elsewhere.

Mind you often you get what you pay for.

It's a given mines been looked after the previous was called Arthur. You don't get many Arthur's doing handbrake turns or tear arsing round estates six up.

As it goes he's had it serviced at Ford judging by the recent motor craft parts on it.

I'm quite amazed at the history and money put into the mondeo I've got now. I think the first owner loved it like a kid from reading the email in the folder!

He did by the sounds of it, he'd had it a long time. I don't think my dad saved much in terms of receipts, a lot was done DIY anyway so.

A mountain of service history is a nice to have but it isn't a deal breaker. Recent service history is better, if not, again I can start some service history under my ownership. I also like things like original bookpack, keys + spares, dealer plates, original floormats and keyrings, but again, it isn't a deal breaker, I can add this stuff myself if needs be just as I did with my old W124 and as I'm doing with my BMW.

Mind, I don't buy cars young enough or expensive enough to have a file of service history.

Yes, I've seen this too. I sometimes pick up cars from dealers for a middleman company who buy and sell cars between various dealerships. Of course, some service books haven't been stamped but the middleman company insist on it and ask me to ball into dealers and get them to stick a stamp in the book, dealers will often just do it to get thier money.

My GS came with very little history. Book is stamped up for its first few years and I have receipts for servicing and repairs from back then. This is only up until the early '80's when the car done most of its mileage. After that, there is a black hole until 2009 when the previous owner took it on.

I would love to find out more on this cars past.

My BX has every receipt, MOT etc since new. When I bought it every stamp was present in the book.

Both these cars are 100% looked after by me, but I keep all receipts for parts and materials to build some history.

Alfa has been with me since new. Alfa being an Alfa would be impossible to sell on with no SH, so has all receipts from Alfa indie and the guy that does my older car MOT's

I have a huge wad of receipts etc for service stuff & anything else my bike has needed in the last 105k. I like to be able to check back how long something lasted if I need to. Such as the oil cooler pipes, the originals got to 95k, one of the replacements failed at 110k...

Both of mine have FSH. And I mean receipts, stamped book etc. The E32 ran out of spaces in the book so I have filled both sides of the inner cover with repairs/oil changes etc with dates and mileages. It has a new book now and already has three stamps in.

Neither car is worth much, I just like doing it.
