Old modern dervs

It's clear you don't want a modern diesel so stop whinging about them.

This is what puts me off this forum, its all or nothing, this mentality that 'they're all against us with these new fangled diesels' I can't get on with. If you want to run a cheap banger your had down as a tight arse if you won't chuck thousands down on mending this that and the other. Giving serious thought as to why I bother contributing to posts.

You have to pick your battles (cars, not other forum members )

None of my old diesels are worn out.  The Discovery has done 101k.  The Astra Isuzu, 107k.  Both get serviced every 10k, both are utterly reliable and cost next to nothing, year on year.  I know an injector or other failure won't happen tomorrow and render the whole ensemble useless.  In fact, the engines will outlast the car easily.

I run a modern Panda multijet as a daily.  It's the small 1.3 common-rail lump, also found in Corsas bruv, etc.  I know it could crap out its high pressure pump, injectors or any random sensor when I start it up at 7am tomorrow morning, but it has a place with me because it does 69mpg everywhere and costs £30 a year to tax.

Mrs Rusty has a Yaris D4d, same sort of thing, high-60s mpg, £30 tax.  My point is, all cars have a place and I'm happy to commit time and money to anything I think might just be 'ok'.  I don't want to drive ancient junk on my way to work on a freezing cold morning, but likewise, I'll keep the old 'uns for as long as possible, which at present, looks like an eternity.

No point getting yer knickers in a twist over any of it, if you don't agree, DON'T TAKE IT PERSONALLY!

Besides, we'll have to scrap everything with an internal combustion engine when the lefties get their way in the future, anyway  :-P

Someone I know works for a VW dealer, and a few years ago was telling me when they get one in for part exchange, it's taken straight down to the auctions as they simply daren't offer a warranty on it! Maybe they were bitten with some of the early ones and things have improved since then, but it's fairly telling...

Slightly off topic, but yesterday, at the mechanics garage that I use, He had in a 2010, on a 60 plate, Audi A1 1.4 tfsi, Very smart looking little thing in red, covered just a measly 34,000 odd miles since new.......It had slipped it's timing chain & the pistons had smacked the valves.

7 years old & it's lunched it's engine?....Fuck That Shit. I'm out.

As an aside, My old Astravan 1.7 cdti has now covered nearly 170,000 miles & feels like it could do that again easily. & my Old 2002 Mercedes C220 CDi,has covered 140,000 odd miles & that feels as strong as an Ox.

I do know that the Mercedes Diesels of this vintage can have issues with the Injector seals (Easy enough fix, Just a thin copper washer, Just a bastard to remove if baked in black soot for ages)

But, what I take comfort in is, None of them have DPF shite & the like. If it goes wrong, It is usually a straight forward fix.
