Retro Show at Santa Pod

Recommended Posts

I went along to the Retro Show at Santa Pod this weekend, in my wisdom i thought it be great fun to camp, what a nobber, 3 hours sleep in a sweating 1/2 man tent suffocating on my own farts, great.

The Sunday was unbelievably hot with no break from the heat in the shade and by 2 pm i was shivering cold with heat stroke and decided to call it a day. I agreed our East Coast Retros club stand and got around 12 cars on it which was good but personally i don't think i'll be doing it again though, there wasn't as much there as previous years and because it was so hot there wasn't as much track action either.

I didn't get many photos as i started to lose interest but here's a few that i did take on the Sunday.

Pimped more with a diesel lump.

These Datsuns were stunning, especially the brown one, i got chatting to the owner and forgot to take any more photos of it apart from the interior which was your purest brown.

This Fiesta was on the drag strip all day running a 1.8TD Endura with a massive turbo, apparently it was running around 14 secs 1/4 miles.

That merc in the first pic was camped opposite us, it was a bit smokey in the morning but on air ride and therefore nothing else matters. I agree the show didn't seem as good as previous years, maybe because of the heat, maybe because it was fathers day, I dunno.

Tried to spot you on a sat evening walk of the camp site, but didn't have it in me to ask every everyone stood near a dolomite "hey, are you trigger from autoshite" I was also pretty pissed by this point.

Stuck it out until about 4 on Sunday and then had to get out of the sun, even with factor 50 I could feel I was beginning to burn.

There was a massive Triumph meet there, in fact more the cars at the show were Triumphs.

The owner of this Sprint got it as a company car brand new when he worked for Triumph, he's dad owned it after him and after he died it ended up in the garage for 20 years before it came back out again.

There was a few nice R5GTT's there too, one was up for £10000! There was also one with a Audi A8 4.2 V8 mount in the back, that was his daily driver!

The drive home was hell in that heat too, thankfully the Dolomite coped ok apart from a bit of fuel vaporization and it got in the red on the A14 at one point when the carriageway lifted up and buckled in the heat! There was cars in the layby with bent wheels and blow outs!

I was a bit of a mess Sat night because of hayfever, drunkness and heat, i had a sleep in the Dolomite for a while!, What car was you in?.

The Mk3 Granada 24v, although I nearly just took my daily because it has working air conditioning.  We were camped near that merc and a bunch of R5GTT guys, who gracefully made us a cheeseburger on Sat night.  I hadn't bothered bringing a BBQ or anything because I figured I'd just get something from the many food vans onsite, except only the fish and chip van was open, serving the driest chips known to man, or the burger van in the fair, which I've eaten from before and it was vile - So I fucked up there..

I am reluctant to complain about the weather being "too good" but the heat yesterday was bordering on unbearable and there is nowhere to escape from it at the Pod.

That Mk3 Fiesta with the derv was amusing, I'm sure one run it broke into the 13's.

Oh we did come over then! About midnight we had a wander and we was wondering if yours was the Cossie lump or not and i was surprised that it done 220k and still looked great!

I the Fiesta owners dad, who was doing a bit of roadkill style repairs to the turbo, said they had got a 13.8 out of it! It smoked like a bastard on the run!

The young girl who owned this had driven down with her parents in the awesome camper set up Land Rover with the modern 200TDi lump from Scotland. The Minors still on its 1098 engine and was doing 25sec times on the strip, winner!

Ah, were you the guys shining a torch through the window lol  I was going to bring the Mk2 but it has a slight* brake issue at the moment which makes it interesting if you ever have to touch them on the motorway.

It was a good showing from the Triumph owners, their 40th anniversary or something I think they said?  Quite nostalgic, I was ferried around in Triumph 2000's as a kid and prior to that my dad had owned about 5 Vitesses which he often liked to talk about...at length.  Then when I was about 10 he got his Mk5 Tina 2.3 Ghia and was a staunch Ford man from that point on, which is where my questionable taste comes from.

I only took a couple of pics but i'll dig them out.

Guilty! Sorry about that, we had loads of people chatting to us mind you, most of them either pissed or stoned or both!

I was told that the kid driving that Mk1 Escort Estate about was 16 year old and his dad was giving it to him as a first car, it has 440bhp! There was another young girl of around 15 being taught how to drive by her dad in a red Spitfire with her mates all sat on the boot, in a field surround by people, tents and other cars, she couldn't drive it. I could see the potential in that going badly wrong.

Some good stuff there.

My pal Mark and I were supposed to be going but a series of events prevented us in the end, the final one being the weather...I would have ended up with serious sunburn and heatstroke. Been to the Pod many times in all weather but never heat like that.

Sounds like the campsites are as crazy as ever...you need to be at least half pissed to kip down there!

Some very nice cars there, and some mental ones too by the sound of it. I love that Chevy COE truck at the top though!
