Paul's Proton Predicament

So having owned over the years far too many cars, all old and cheap by choice or necessity and the majority British, how did I end up with this? My main car which was an MGF had recently been rear ended and written off, with the insurance settling the damage costs relatively swiftly, I should have looked around for a replacement MGF locally as I had with this one which was located in a neighbouring village. However I already have another MGF and also a Rover 45 saloon, with a half share in a Jaguar XJ8 and so some of the money was spent on essential works to my own 2 cars and with the rest ..... The chase was on.

I looked on the usual Internet auction sites etc as well as locally but nothing really took my fancy, whilst on here I just missed out on a XJ6 and looked into the Scimitar SS1 ( been there and done it ) and the MGF. As many of us probably do, especially in the early hours, I was browsing EBay and considering cheap 4 sweater cabriolets or an early Mondeo, when it appeared - a Proton which was the early Mitsubishi based hatchback in what looked like great condition with only 26000 miles and a current MOT. It was The 1.3 motor and the interior shouted 80's Japanese plastifest with not a curve in sight on the bodywork. There was only one day and one bid so out of curiosity I had a bid and was the winner.

The next day was a busy one and in the early evening my friends iPad bleeped to tell me I was still winning with only 5 minutes to go. Reality hit, it's a great Autoshite machine, after all when did you last see one and who really cares. I used to hate to see one in front of me when they were current in the 90's as it meant being held up by a hat wearing old dodderer trundling along at 25 mph in the national speed limit zone. Panic, try to cancel bid, hope I am outbid but Sods law and I win the thing for less than £200. See, nobody wants them. My son came down to tell me his own iPad had informed him I had bought another source of embarrassment to him and I pondered how and when I could collect a car based in Hove from rural Lincolnshire.

Then excitement commenced! This thing is amazing and it's mine! No pictures yet but I will attempt to add them from EBay tomorrow and updates to follow. I had turned up to the Bubblecar museum meet in my friends XJS a couple of weeks ago, if only I'd had my Proton. Paul's Proton!

My ebay bargain with collection next Monday.

Had one 15 years ago. The interior was horrible and very plastic and the door tops flapped at 100, well it said 100!

Nothing went wrong with it! Sold after 3 years for purchase price £225.

Great buy.

Could do with some bits off of this for mine, namely the autochoke mechanism and the instrument cluster.

Dollywobbler might want the bonnet and front bumper as they'll match his.

Can you let me know the name of the yard its at. Hope it isn't gone as i'm only in Liverpool working every few months!

Aye, very interested. I need that bit of trim beneath the headlamps too. And possibly the headlamps themselves.
