I think your Mits is a Toyota Corona, your Toyota Capella a Mazda 616/Capella and I've stored too many useless facts in an otherwise empty memory.

Yes, I'm a bit crap at naming stuff, they're all a bit generic from those eras!

Here's a line up of horribleness:

Oh, some decaying 1,000,000km trucks for you - I was nearly ploughed into by a pickup crossing here, and my wheels locked up on the back, far passing the turn pike on the road! It was my fault though.

Tthe yard was packed with some interesting stuff, will have a look tomorrow!

Thanks! I was in Pattaya which I didn't know was a bit of a total 'tourist destination', but I'm in Ubon Ratchathani which is very quiet, which I like more. I book out on Tuesday and we were intended to go north, but not sure yet! I don't know how anyone could drive without air con over here! The people here are pretty awesome, it's going to be a massive shock coming back to the utter misery (in comparison) that is England.

I always considered Pattaya to be a total sex tourist destination?

Should be getting nice and warm that way by now - the monsoon season should also be helping with the humidity too....no?

When I went North to Chang Mai - we took the over-night sleeper train from Bangkok. I don't know if that's the best option these days or not but you get overnight accommodation in bunk beds with very cold AC, meet loads of locals and arrive fresh in Chang Mai at the start of the next day :)

This was back in 1996 for me - so YMMV of course

Ooh, looks like you've found a couple of 'Bulletside' Datsun 620 pickups there. Probably the best looking of the 1970s Japanese ones of that type.

I think the light blue Mitsubishi coupe is a Galant/Sigma?

The Thais DO love anything new and shiny, and cars/trucks are very much a symbol of perceived status. They only make do with tatty shite if they can't get finance on something new.

Pattaya is very much a resort city; Thailand's Brighton. Anything goes. I'm sure you'll have witnessed many an overweight and under-dressed, sweaty, red farang, proudly dragging along a tiny, dark skinned, hot-pant-wearing North-Eastern (Thai) girl, twenty-odd years his junior.

Ubon Ratchathani is almost another world as I'm sure you've realised, on the FAR eastern frontier, where the Thai and Cambodian squaddies have been taking pot-shots at each other in recent months.

To Chiang Mai? These days the sleepers run so slowly (under-investment in track maintenance,) that it usually take 'til at least mid afternoon to reach CM. IT is a good experience to do once, just as the guide books say, but it's a real drag if your days are valuable and you've done it several times before. I prefer non-a/c, then there's no danger of being too cold (!) and you can open the windows in the morning as you trundle slowly through the wooded Northern mountains. I don't know about arriving "fresh" though!!! Fresh is one thing you'll not be after that trip!

I have done it a few times in a bus, and I'd recommend it. (As for any long distance trip) Choose a VIP company like "999" or similar. Not a "tourist bus". VIP are big, newish coaches, often double deckers. Tickets go on sale one week before travel (I think), and they sell quick, best to buy at the station. Choose the front seat at the top for max legroom and GR9 views. Takes about 10-11hours, at about 30mph all the way, but smooth and comfy. Avoid overnight buses. They're a false economy for your time, you'll end up jet lagged from lack of sleep.

I've driven it in about 8-9 hours including breaks, it wasn't too bad.

It's too bad we have tenants in out Chiang Mai apartment right now, otherwise you could have had free digs for a bit! Give me a shout if you fancy exploring the North in a bit more luxury - the Volvo 850 is sitting idle there, a friend is taking care of it 'til we go back in November.

I was gonna say... I bet you're bloody hot 'n' sweaty there just now! I hated this time of year when I lived there. It's much more pleasant in the winter, and it feels all the better because England is so completely and utterly miserable at that time!

Hope you're enjoying the Thai Back Light Lottery?

Just to add that ChinaTom has been around where you are in the last few months - Nakorn Pranom, Mukdahan and Ubon Rachatani, as well as just across the Mekong in Laos, and Cambodia. Where is he right now? His path and mine have never quite crossed yet, but yours might.

Give him a quick pm.

What's wrong with just hopping on the plane? There's 2 or 3 airlines competing on the route, so plenty of good deals to be found even on very short notice.

LOL, nice one!

Is that your video, gtd?

Well, you're in good condition.

Yeah, that's one I took back in the 1990's.

It got me in a lot of trouble actually - I was supposed to be going on a diving trip to Thailand with a bunch of mates (about 20 of them) from HK and my pal Chrissy (in the video) asked if she could tag along.

The rest of the guys were going to Indonesia first then meeting up with me in Phuket, this was when the smoke from the Indonesian forest fires enveloped a large portion of SE Asia, so my HK mates decided going to Phuket would be a disaster - thankfully, I had Chrissy for company!

I'd told my GF in HK (a Chinese lass) that I was away for a guys trip to Thailand and when she only saw Chrissy in the videos she was not too impressed to say the least (understatement of the year) - especially when the first viewing of the tape was done in front of our mutual friends - oops!

Ha ha, good work! Quite a tale.

I wonder what life has brought to that bunch, 14 years on!

Hey, Station! Any more spots for us today?

I have some more, I'll post them up later!

Back in Pattaya, but going to some out of the way place next week. Kind've sick of the typical European over here, got talking to a 100% GENUWINE Farang (fat, white hair, old, sandals, FULL OF SHIT, etc) who was oddly slagging off the Farang culture. He was seeing my missus' mum and generally being very unpleasant, this was before he took us to Walking Street so he could pay to grope women - grim!

Meh - you love it! Can't keep away!

I hope you're making the most of good interweb speeds there for spottings uploads.

So you're traveling with spouse and mother-in-law? The three of you on a shagged out Honda Wave 110 with just one operational drum brake? With one pudding-bowl helmet between you?

Happy days.

Lol, no she came down from Ubon (her family originates from there, her last name is N.Ubon - great grandfather was king's right hand man or something and was 'given' the town).

Here's a Holden Premier, the windows open, I think it's "abandoned" as it was at the bottom of a road by the Moon River (equivalent of a Fiat Uno on New Ferry beach with the windows kicked in in 1992), but the rear light cavities had cling film over them?

Now (if I'm keeping count correctly...) this is the second time you've referred to a Datsun 620 as a Toyota.

This simply will not do!

Please note the following photograph of a Datsun 620:

You should have a read of the book written by Stephen Leather entitled, "Hooker, Line & SInker". (It was free download many years ago.)

Edit:

It looks like this book might have been re-named to "Private Dancer"?

http://www.stephenleather.com/privatedancer.html

The book got great reviews from Bernard Trink at the Bangkok Post and the Pattaya Mail, both taking the view that Private Dancer should be required reading for all visitors to the Land of Smiles. Forewarned is forearmed! I think it works so well because it gives the story from so many viewpoints, including several Thai characters. Most books about the Thai bar scene only give the Westerners point of view.

Wow, she's a Na-Ubon?! Not that it means much these days, maybe raises a few eyebrows. Are her lot still a bit posh? I was gonna ask if she's from Thailand... you know my MrsKJ is, don't you? Also I'm pretty sure (Tim)Claypole's is too. That's three of us. And not forgetting ChinaTom - his wife is from an obscure hill tribe in southern China. Not far away really.

And no, I did't find mine in Pattaya. Or Patong, Hua Hin or Puket! Or online.

Sorry - back on track!

I was in Japan a couple of years ago on a job. Millions of beautiful women. The other chap I was working with snagged himself one, who turned out to be minted. Tokyo nightlife was ace, but by God was it expensive. A pint was working out at nearly ten quid. While we were there, it was some kind of weird "National Kissing Day" or somesuch Japanese craziness. I didn't mind at all, until a bloke tried to kiss me!

To be honest, I always felt the Japanese women were the least attractive in East Asia. I observed a lot of "butterface" types, you saw them from behind (especially in Tokyo) and thought "wow" - then they turned around and... oh dear :?

I'm not suggesting you don't get beautiful Japanese women (by any stretch of the imagination), just that, on average, they were not as good looking by comparison to other Asian nations.

It's a great experience for a Western bloke living in Eastern Asia - it really is like being a woman in the West! By that I mean it's the opposite culture - the chicks are chasing the blokes - not the other way around  I used to have some great conversations with Western women in HK complaining that they could not meet a nice guy because all the western guys had yellow fever. I just commented that it was sour grapes

6 years of living like that does have an effect on you
