What the funk is up with some of these scrapyard owners/workers? Why do they happen to be the most miserable, cantankerous, bastards? Any job is too big, any request is a conversation they don't fucking want!I dread going in the majority near me as they are simply unbearably pissed off. Why reply in a civil, helpful manner when a single grunt will do. Don't get up out of your oily chair in the corner of your portacabin, I'll just struggle to communicate with you while you glare menacingly as if I'd just pissed all over your kids!I've encountered a couple which were unique in being nice, but they've all shut up and moved on. All I'm left with now are a bunch of curmudgeonly fuckers. :(I nearly couldn't hold it in today and was about to explode and ask 'what the fuck his problem was', and he suddenly turned reasonable.And now they're pricing individual stuff in line with what they could 'buy it now' on ebay!! TWATS!

I know what you mean, but TBH my one and only local scrappie (all others have closed, it's West London sweetie) is run by a reasonable bloke. Maybe it's just he's a bit sweet on me....

I detest scrapyards for just that reason. Now that ebay is here, there's not alot of justification for them really TBH, their miserable , greasy, rude cholesterol-choked owners are like the last of the dinosaurs. Almost the end of the road for them, and they have only themselves to blame.

It makes no sense to me either, there's one place where the owners are so miserable and apathetic that I detest the idea of them receiving any sort of money - I genuinely hate them. But even the more pleasant ones tend to be laughably disorganised and have bad business practices. Here's an idea - keep a log of cars on a whiteboard next to the phone, then when someone asks you if you've got one, you don't have to go "Dunno" and be fed up when you have to go out to the yard and check.Another good one is panels - most places stack cars which is fair enough but it's basically requiring people to climb on the bonnet of the car at the bottom. A lot of times panels seem to get damaged through accidents, reversing forklifts into them or whatever - here's a thought - why not take good panels off the cars on arrival and stash them in a shipping container? There could be £50 worth of bonnet on each of the cars they bring in, but as soon as someone jumps on it, it's useless!

I like my nearest scrappy, the prices are very cheap and they just let you root around.The stock barely ever changes though, so a lot of cars are completely raped or the parts are knackered.The one car I need to access (a 405 estate like mine, but in red) is completely battered and nearly always hidden behind/below other cars.Hey, now that I think of it, it's a bit shit.

I once worked in a breakers yard, in the office dealing with punters. It would make me miserable too dealing with scores of dickheads who want everything for nothing, toolboxes full of nicked bits etc.Once, I was up the top bit that is next to an open field and found a hole in the hedge where one cheeky bastard had been in, taken off loads of bits for a BX (this was 1994/5) and hidden them by this hedge. The twat was planning to come back in the dead of night and have it away.So I aerosoled 'FUCK OFF WANKER" on a Cortina bonnet and propped it up by the gap in the hedge. The yards I go to know me by name but can still be curt. It's a very tough business and even some big and well established yards are in financial trouble. "The EU want me to jump through hoops and you want to haggle over a Vectra headlight? Fuck off!!"My favourite is 'Do you know how much they are new Mate?" when buying a part. My reply is always the same: 'Do you know how much the car it came off cost new mate?"

I go to a bloke near Halifax for older (126 and earlier) Mercedes parts. He's a little eccentric but otherwise a lovely bloke. I turned up not so long ago with a shopping list. He'd ticked off the first couple of items, then caught sight of the clock, 'Bloody 'ell lad. Time for us tea.' He then proceeded to break off from what he was doing, prepare a microwaveable meal for one, eat it (with thickly-buttered white bread) then call his mate to discuss it. 'Aye it were alright - seven out of ten.''Right, where where we?' he said acknowledging my presence for the first time in a good fifteen minutes 'passenger side rear light lens for a W116? No problem.' He's a bit crackers but, come on, would you run a scrapyard?

I must say that most of the scrappies I've used locally have been quite pleasant. A couple of them were a bit curmudgeonly but still easy and fair enough to deal with. In general I've found the "upmarket" scrappies to be the most twattish.It's actually quite some time since I used a scrapyard. I tend to buy bits new, use eBay or use a spares car these days.

There was one called Cheshire Car Components in Chester and the bloke in there was really nice and always gave a cheap price for regular customers. Isn't that how independent businesses attract and keep custom? They close last year, which is a big pity.

There used to be two belting ones up at St Annes, and a reasonable one down Essex St in Preston - the St Annes ones have long closed down due to legislation and Essex St has gone all "recycling centre" with corporate logo'ed fleece jackets and nothing over 5 years old surviving the crusher by more than a week. I miss the good old days of crawlig over teetering piles of Morris 1000's to try to get to a pair of feugo foglamps...

The scrapy's here are alright, theres only one i wont use thats owned by a couple of Inbred brothers, who are rip off merchants and always accuse you of pinching.The other 3 (all within a 10 mile radius) are great. Let you have a wander, lend you tools. Im lucky as there are still some big yards here, and they all still keep old stock 80's and 90's stuff (as thats what most of the paupers and valley commandos are still driving)And of course the E36 BMW is becoming quite common in the yards which is great for me, shame none of them are ever 6 cylinders or fully loaded

Actually that's my dream occupation, but I'd want the old fashioned type yard, with an old Bristol Half-cab bus as the office, an old tractor with front end loader as the forklift, loads of old Humber's, Jags etc and old vans rotting into the earth, a Bedord J type as the breakdown and a nice German Shepherd Dog. I can't see how I'd make a living out of it, unfortunately, so it will have to wait a few more years and be funded as my retirement project.

Me an all, but can't see either of up getting away with it what with H&S taking the fun out of it....

My favourite old scrapyard was tucked down a country road, you could turn up, roam the site and they would even muck in if you were having difficulty getting a part off a car. Friendly and cheap.Now you turn up, you aren't allowed into the yard because of insurance, cars are cannibalised and then quickly crushed and they dont want to know if you are after a tiny piece of trim, or a foglight switch.The one I use most frequently is great, but can be expensive.

I got banned from a scrapyard by dropping a couple of foglamp bulbs into my toolkit. No amount of 'but they'd be going in the crusher anyway' protests from me would make them see sense, guess they'd have been horrified at the amount (handful) of fuses and screws I had "stolen" over the years.

When I used to live in Torbay there was a chap in his thirties who ran Quarry Breakers in Paignton, Devon who was sound, he used to finish every sentence with 'duck' as in 'that'll be a tenner duck', I honestly don't think he was bent though-just northern and friendly. When I was running an SD1 ten year ago the scrap yard was like a sweet shop. Jersey scrapyard is full of twats, you ask them to keep something back for a day and they crush it...fucking wankers.

No, not done engine internals, but did come out with a wiper motor assembly down me trousers, hence the limp! Top scrapyard tip, don't take a tool box (you get scrutinised less), take a multi tool (mine's Victorinox, AKA Swiss Army) and wear combat trousers, stuff everything about your person!

Used to be able to wander about at your leisure, get what you needed from the vast selection of rotting motors many of which had been there for years and best of all they were cheap! Last time i went they had a nice selection of 'classics', loads of old '80's tat and the obligatory ex Burnley & Pendle Bristol single deckers.

 

Went last year though and everything had changed. No access to the yard, have to wait while the 9012 year old owner went and checked if said car / part was available. No admitance due to H&S y'see.
