Focus - Cambelt Change cost

Recommended Posts

WIfe's Focus is an old Y plate 1.6 Auto that we bought it a couple of years ago as the typical 1 elderly lady owned from new with 25K on the clock.

Car has been faultless in the two years we have owned it, and is coming up for an MOT.

No issues to make me think that it'll fail, so if it passes was thinking about getting the Cambelt/Water pump etc changed by the local garage.

Anyone got any ideas on price and if there is anything else that would be good doing at the same time.

Cheers

Last time I had my 1.6 done it was about £260 at an independant garage, that was about 4 years ago though. That was for the a full Gates kit. My water pump was leaking slightly so that was done too (no extra labour). The pump isn't run off the belt but IIRC sits behind it so the belt would have to come off to change it in the future, probably worth doing at the same time.

No more than £150 at a non vat reg garage I would say. The pump runs off the drivebelt anyway, then again it has been known for it to whip round and chuck the other belt off.

On these it's usually the tensioner to go, but it's difficult to tell as the top idler pulley can give similar symptoms.

Not too bad a job to DIY, so long as you've done plate thick enough to lock the ends of the cams.

Do pump as well because if drive belt fails the whole lot can end up in a mess. My mates dad had an immaculate V reg laguna 1.8 pez - garage fitted new timing belt but not drivebelt as well. Result? Top end overhaul that cost Him £1500.

If you're near The Midlands you could always ask Dave Aspley off here for a quote. He sorted my cambelt out, and is fully DollyWobbler approved too.
