Best cutting compound / polish.

I'm sure I saw a thread on here a while ago about this but I'm damned if i can find it.

Mother in law's trusty Starlet has turned a lovely* shade of pogweasel / vrp and I want to give it a bloody good polish. I know naff all about using cutting compounds and looking on ebay the 3m stuff seems crazy money. Are there better or cheaper alternatives out there?

Farecla G3. Not the consumer stuff they sell in Halfords, but the stuff that comes in a yellow bottle from motor/paint factors. If you want a finer compound, go for the G10.

Although by hand, autoglym super resin Polish will do a job.

Ive been looking at dual action polisher s today! Very tempted, but the £180 could be better spent on making the xantia not ride like shit, or new tyres, or rust removal...

Then when youve done that finish it with farecla wax top

Sorry to hijack the thread. The paint on my white Sierra keeps going dull and roughish. I've clayed it and used Autoglym but after a few months it gets dull again. Tried poor boys white in the past-but still the same.

Any advice other than burn it or polish every week.

The best by a million miles is 3M FastCut Plus. It's expensive at 30 quid a bottle but all the bodyshops use it now.

The problem you probably have is failing clearcoat. It's been a while since I was so beardy about such things but if it fails fast, all you can do is polish it every week, or get it resprayed...

I've recently machine polished using Meguiars 205 with a hard green pad followed by Meguiars 105 on a soft black pad from Slims Detailing. I then used Dodo Juice Purple Haze wax to top it off.

I've never really polished a car before but the results are outstanding on a horrendously tarnished MX5.

3 weeks later and the water just runs off it.

I picked up a Cocraft dual action Polisher from Clas Ohlson last year for £60 - I finally got around to using it a few weeks ago and the results were seriously impressive! I can very much recommend one - along with Sonax EX 04-06 polish and Chemical Guys Quantum polishing pads. I haven't got it but Sonax Cutmax comes highly recommended online too if more cut is required.

If you want to get the most out of your compound you really do need a machine. Trying to do it by hand is a tough task.

Further comments: I've used G3 in the past, its really hardwork to buff off. The Meguiars 105 and 205 is a doddle to buff off with a microfibre and in my 'limited' experience streets ahead in terms of finish.

This.

G3 is old and horrible to use but does produce results too

3M fastcutplus is exceptional but expensive

I used Farcela G6 on the 75 when we have wetsanded it after its repaint. As its good condition now i use either britemax black max for gloss or there perferct prep with a little more cut. Always finish with a wax. If you looking for a bit more gloss from good condition paint Autosmart Topaz is great. Its more of a sealant but gives good gloss, no cut and can go on plastics too.
