Any experience of cyprus?

Although i do a lot of long distance triathlons if youre saying its not a good idea to cycle to work ill take that advice. Ive never been to cyprus so really have no idea about the terrain or roads.

Hopefully the extra pay whilst out there will soften the blow of any losses when my 2 years are up. One of the reasons we get extra for being abroad.

A triathlete ought to be fit enough, certainly; but see my comments about scootering.  Between towns you really want four wheels, preferably a pickup, because all the locals will have one and they are trying to kill you.  Within the bigger towns a scooter does have a chance, not least because there's safety in numbers.  I did occasionally cycle, and ride a scooter, so I'm not just scaremongering.

Terrain: varies, as with most places, but think Lake District or Snowdonia and you won't be far wrong.  Cyprus has a larger percentage (like about 99.5) of drunks behind the wheel, both locals and Brits.

Haha sweet. Ill keep an open mind with it all then. Id love a pickup. Aslong as i can get a childseat in the back the mrs will be happy.

Again, thanks for all the tips, ill keep you all posted when i find out

Eddy is right about local motorists actively attempting to run into other cars, people, animals, buildings etc. The north is especially bad although I did plenty of scootering about there and just about survived.

I know someone in the North near Girne who was trying to give away an Isuzu Aska last time I was there. I can point you in his direction should you wish. It's featured in my spotting thread but it would take me a month to find it and post a link, so I shan't.

If you do move there I could also point you in the direction of possibly the only Daihatsu Compagno Estate in Europe.

Akrotiri is in the south, the Greek side.  Importing a vehicle from the north, the Turkish-occupied side, won't be straightforward in any way.  There's no love lost.  If you have a car registered in one zone, you can use it to travel in and around the other by buying "local insurance" at the frontier.  I've never had to test its effectiveness, but we took our pickup over once, and the friends we went to visit came to us in the south a couple of times.  Don't try that in a hire car, they will have clauses strictly forbidding such an exercise.  As I said: no love lost.

Oh and you'll be going straight into hot summer, so be ready with the Factor 50!

Love the place.

My Uncle retired to Mazatos when he finished with Gulf Air. The Larnaca area is my favourite bit and the 'new' road network is fantastic.

When I last went in '07 they had just finished the motorway to Pafos, and the locals hadn't yet learnt to use it. It might be (and is) sterotypical and borderline racist but we passed several pickups, lorries and old Toyotas whose visibly inebriated occupants were swaying gaily with their vehicles doing same.

Only place where I've ever sunbathed on the beach and then thrown snowballs in the mountains within the same hour.
