VSCC driving tests day, Brooklands

Popped over to Brooklands this morning to watch the driving tests of the Vintage Sports Car Club. Some fantastic cars that have got me thinking that perhaps I should change the 2CV to something far less practical and older... Wonder what it's worth?

Anyway, a few snaps from the morning, more can be found here: https://goo.gl/photos/sdoWisARY8bbVH5x9

Excellent event, haven't been for a few years.   Something really uplifting about pre-war chod doing its thing.....

I have a lot of respect for those VSCC chaps. Many of their 80 year old deathtraps cost supercar money, but are still driven in all weathers and in a fairly spirited manner !

Is the good, old Austin Seven still the cheapest way to join VSCC ? Are there any Autoshite options ? Discuss !

Indeed. VSCC events are always a great laugh, watching old stuff driven brutally! I would LOVE to do something similar in the 2CV, but haven't really found anything that ticks the boxes. Proper trials perhaps. 2CV is not brilliant for trials (piss-poor steering lock, front handbrake) but I wouldn't want to be doing it to win.

I'd definitely like to find some autoshite options for this. It does seem Austin seven is the cheapest, but definitely not an Ulster. Someone was tanking around in a BMW and all sorts of Frazer Nash etc etc, mega spends for those.

Pre-war chod is the coolest stuff you can own

That Amilcar belongs to a friend of mine, nice capture (nice car, too).

And no, sadly Austin Sevens are no longer the cheapest way into VSCC. Something unloved, slow and French is probably the best way, like with all things in life

Then your friend with the amilcar had my son practically in tears - the car couldn't quite make it up the hill and the marshals were a bit slow with the chock. Fair play to the fella, he tried again straight away and got further the second time.

Slow and French, I like the sound of that!

I was drooling over this earlier:

It's not too far from my house, but I can't help fearing a project - if the finished car has plenty of value, I'm not sure why the seller wouldn't just finish it.

But that said, I've always fancied a Citroën c-something, pre traction, or perhaps an Austin 10.

Because for a start I dont think it's VSCC eligible so limited the events it could actually take part in, and because if you try and change the V5 from 'saloon' to anything else the DVLA will take the car's I'D away. And also it looks pretty horrid.

Ha, yes it's not the prettiest of bodies. I didn't know that about the dvla or the vscc-eligible status. Looks like I've got some reading to do!

There was one chap pottering around in a massive saloon, definitely wasn't going to break any records, but he was having fun.

no problem:-

  1. just keep reminding Rachel the zx is her car
  2. strip the nippppa of all fripperies like seats and trim
  3. use nipper for trials
  4. revel in "half a porsche" engine note

job done
