My stongest memories of the time (89/90) were flying down the autobahn at a ton plus, in the middle of the night on the way back from Hannover, normally after a night out at the "Disco Duck" (an alternative/punk club) and then being aware of the smell of two stroke oil :?: A few minutes later you'd blast past a Trabant which appeared to be going in reverse by comparision. You soon learned that as soon as you smelled two-stroke oil you better get into the outside lane! I also travelled through East Germany and Czechosolvakia in '91 in my old '86 Nissan Bluebird 2.0 SGL (C 505 SSG) - I've got some photos somewhere, should probably scan them at some point when I'm home again.Staying on topic with the East German theme, you should check out the film "Goodbye Lenin" which I thought was an excellent movie :D

'Goodbye Lenin' is a good film. 'The Lives of Others' is also very good for ring-ding-ding 2 stroke action and Zuk and Robur commercials both play important roles. In fact, its blindingly good all round and I betcha the ending will bring a tear to your eye even if you're a toughie!

Yeah Lives of others is a brilliant film. It is one of the few films that brought a tear to my eye since I was a kid.Great pictures, thanks a lot. I love stuff like this, Im quite into history and I have become obsessed with the GDR!BTW, did anyone see 'the lost world of communism' documentaries on the BBC? I bought the DVD cos I missed them on TV. The East Germany one annoyed me slightly as it was billed as being an 'impartial' account, but it just seemed to focus on the negatives and skipped some important facts...

yup..Wartburg it is..remember seeing one..a coupe from what i remember languishing in a squats back shed in East Berlin.Hitching on the autobahns in 1990 i saw my first abandoned Trabis..ive got an old dodgey photos of a partially stripped one..movie wise..the ultimate DDR film is the Deutches Kettensage Massaker..or German Chainsaw Massacre..its facken hilarious and full of trabis and wartburgs involved in chases...

Might look out for that DVD - I noticed the series was on, but the only time I look at the TV is over the top of the laptop when swmbo has it on.Returning to the subject of films, I suspect the Russian road movie 'Koktebel' could be rich in tat. I intend getting hold of a copy soon, so if it is I'll report back.
