Mot question

I need to take a picture of my rear tyres and ask if they will be a big fat advisory or a fail. Their just above the wear blocks, although slightly more worn on the outer edges. And quite perished on the sidewalls...

Also need to nip up the bolts on the drivers seat frame as their a bit loose

Headlights - I get flashed quite alot whilst driving with them on, but this is because the back doesn't always sit right, so they do point up. A quick push on the lever to push the back up stops the flashing. Should I expect the tester to do this, or should I dial them down a turn each to compensate?

I need to fix the numberplate bulb that doesn't work

and hopefully that's about it.

Vulg - can you borrow a car seat off Chompy for the day? Every time I've had a seat fitted for a test they never move them and just advise that they could not test that seatbelt. Could be a get out clause?

Above the wear blocks means legal tread (the blocks are at 2mm, legal limit is 1.6mm) Cracks in the sidewall are advise only unless you can see the cords through them.

Yes, do tighten the seat up.

You can reasonably expect the tester to adjust the controls in the car to make the headlights pass. I can't say for sure that all testers would though, might be worth your while adjusting them anyway if people are flashing you.

And yes, we aren't allowed to remove a child seat to inspect the adult belt holding it in case it isn't put back correctly, so in that case you get a not tested advisory.

Sweet, thanks!

I do keep meaning to sort the lights, but need to sort the rear height corrector mainly. May dial them down a turn for now then, then re-adjust when the suspension is in better fettle. Ironically it's always the pricks with high up blinding zeons that flash me, never normal stanced cars. I just flash them back at the moment, then flick the lever back for 2 seconds to raise the back up.

Can't you make twiddling the lever each time you start the car part of your routine? Then you won't dazzle people and it's a free fix :-)

I already do sort of, but if I sit in traffic it sinks down a bit, or I get impatient and just drive off. It's usually only when driving slightly uphill, then the angle of the cars coming the other way hits the sweet spot. Only get maybe 2 flashes each night.

I've not been too bothered so far as I always get blinded by other pricks badly adjusted lights, or get someone behind me who I think is flashing me but it's just their self adjusting xeons bouncing up and down with the road surface, or the idiots with one whole side of their car in complete darkness, with maybe both fogs on for extra points.

Bu obv the autoshite way is to not cause annoyance to others, so I'll turn them one screw turn down and see how it goes, but it wont be fixed until I do all the spheres, height corrector and LHM, and that wont be until next year unless I happen to win a couple of hundred quid sadly.

No, lapbelts are not OK for the specified front seats. Fit them to a car with no belts and you will fail.

Thank you... they will have to come out altogether then...even though it doesn't offically need an mot....

Can we sticky this? Would be great if we had one place to ask these questions

No, lapbelts are not OK for the specified front seats. Fit them to a car with no belts and you will fail.

The exact wording is "Foremost in the vehicle and furthest from the driver's seat" meaning if you remove your front passenger seat, the back seat requires a belt on the passenger side. If there is a centre front seat it doesn't need a belt if the car is pre 1987 and can be a lap belt.

It depends on the age of the vehicle. The manual asks for all statutory seat belts to be of the appropriate type.

If a none statutory belt is fitted to a seat, for example a pre 65 car on the driver's seat, the way I read it the manual doesn't cover the type of belt fitted and a lap belt would be acceptable for test.

Agree - if a statutory belt is required, it must be of the appropriate type, so for a driver's seat, post 65, a lap belt is not sufficient.

My reading on it is subject to having done the MoT tester's course on which they made it clear that lap belts are NEVER acceptable for driver or specified passenger. If you fit belts to an exempt car you need to fit appropriate ones.

The reason they are frowned upon is because a lapbelt will fold you in half and smack your head against the dashboard, which is a worse outcome than not wearing a belt.

PS, Section 5.1 is a nightmare to navigate!

P.s. Just activated my card, had it for weeks but couldn't be arsed, got an email telling me that they knew I had one and should activate it now!

Another MOT question because I'm too lazy to look it up -

When I have the headlights on & brake/indicate right the foglamp warning lamp comes on. But the back lights are doing the correct things.

I assume it's a fail anyway?

As this thread seems already hijacked here's another. Does a car 1st tested in 2010 need wipers? Exempt because reg or something?

It failed it's test in Aug on 23 counts, impressive for a car built in 2010 by Westfield with 2k miles but no wipers not mentioned. Did they remove the screen to test it or did the testers Biro run out?

Posted

Hooli - if all the external lights are doing their thing correctly, and the foglamp warning comes on when you use the foglamp then it's a pass/advise because there isn't a specific fail listed for this case.

Spike - They probably tested it without the windscreen, because that looks too tall to see over to me.

edit, I looked it up - check last year's advisories.

no washers fitted
no screen fitted
no wipers fitted
steering wheel quick release

Yes I attempted to gear up a mini clubman. Big 12" wheels on the front. Hill man Imp Wheels.

Thanks, I can continue to ignore it then.

Do I need front brake backplates on a 1989 Merc for test? Mine are pretty sad and I'll skip them if I can.

Posted

Backplates on disks aren't needed. Lots of testers get confused and fail them like it's a rotten drum backplate because the fail seems to be there when you navigate the system.

have a word with mot tester when you get there and ask if he can set the lights on his beam tester- he may or may not charge you
