TDCI what to look for

The Autoshite spec would be the 2.0TDDi with 110hp or so, in LX form with phat wheeltrimz.

That's the 'safe' diesel; 'safe' due to being unable to gain sufficient speed to cause mischief.

It's a TDCI 130bhp. First job might be the tensioner. Sounds ok to me but previous owner reckoned it was a bit noisy.

Rear wheel bearings can be a pita to replace but they are cheap enough.

I second that, you need t50 or maybe a t45 to remove them, but you will round the holes off.

The oem hub has a hole for access but its to small for a socket, so I had to cut it to pieces to get access to bash a socket on.

Aye, rear bearings are easy. All you need is 10 minutes and some decent, longish torx bits.

Nowt to it.

Thoughts so far... it's certainly a bit more gruff than the petrol. That said it starts very easily and pulls like a train. Clutch feels good, bites only halfway up like it should - in fact I'd go as far as to say it feels to me like it's been replaced in the not too distant past, one gripe is it's had a cheap pattern exhaust fitted that resonates quite badly, I'll live with that as it's not rusty and it's not blowing. It also seems to suffer with the inevitable TDCI overcooling, from what I've read, you could replace the thermostat and it would be doing it again in 6 months.

First job though is a clean out of the EGR at the weekend.

Yes. At the money I've paid - £400 I'm going to run her till she blows. I'm not getting into spending silly money putting right faults - you wouldn't sleep at night if you read what trouble people had with them!!

Seems good on fuel but were I to pick I wouldn't have a diesel again the power delivery is awful. It's all a massive burst then nothing. Still it's doing 44mpg, massive in the back and it's £80 a year cheaper on the tax so...

Yeah my 130 TDCi had a cliff-like power drop off. But 30 - 60 was doable in third and it briefly felt unstoppable.

It's little wonder the clutches and flywheels last 15 minutes given the power delivery between 2-3000rpm is absolutely furious.

Cleaned the EGR out today, it was absolutely choked. Went through a tin of carb cleaner! Had a drive, does feel a bit smoother now, so obviously done some good. Might decoke the inlet manifold next as that will likely be the same!!

Given the tendency for these to have difficult to diagnose trouble stemming from the cam sensor. A new one is about £15 so do you think it's worth chucking a new one on as a precaution? It doesn't have a problem yet but I thought as a preventative job?

Ive broke two 2.2 TDCi mondeos that have been upwards of 200k both on original DMF and clutch. If its had an easy life it will be fine. Change the engine oil and filters regular. Other known problems can be as follows

- Rear calipers seize

- Hand brake cables seize holding caliper on

- Rear subframe bushes

- EGR valves need a good clean every few weeks

- If its a 2.0 TDCi pre 06, check all vacuum lines for holes

- WIndow regulator cables snap

Ive got a conservatory full of mk3 parts, come and get them if you want them before they go in the bin! (offer open to any shitter running a MK3)

Where is the sensor from and who makes it? Many have experienced trouble with aftermarket sensors from ECP and others! I'd go big brand (Bosch, etc) or dealer part. I'd dealer part is expensive, known good second hand part.

I'd leave it unless its really old and/or giving trouble imo.

Ordered some pads to fit to the rear at the weekend. £10.50. Should improve the awful brakes I hope.

Further fixeration includes replacing the Dash bulbs with some working ones from the breakers costing a £1. Plus an hour of my time.

Blotted its copybook today. Upon manoeuvring on the drive it wouldn't steer. As if I'd hit the kerb or whatever, got out to have a look and both wheels were facing inwards!

Jacked it up, someone previously has replaced the axial rod (looked almost new) and hadn't put it in properly, must have been only held in by a few threads! Easy enough, stripped TRE off and put it in proper tight.

Good job didn't happen at 40mph that's all I can say.

Decided to do a few jobs today, first stop the dash lights. Changed a bulb a month ago then the rest packed in a week later... £3 on EBay purchased the correct 501 and 286 bulbs and did the lot. Much improved I think...

Were the bulbs easy to change? I ask because my Dads TDCi  Mondeo Estate has done the same thing, fuel gauge & half the speedo not illuminated now.

He mentioned it the other week funnily enough.

Also, his has OMGDMF rattle, it is quite noticeable when idling, but, he has had it Just over a year & a bit now, & touch wood, it has not once FTP'D.

He said it is very good on fuel & handy because of it's size.

Yes, very easy, you need some 501 bulbs for the speedo and 286 for the LCD. Remove the lower fascia, underneath there's 2 screws holding the surround to the clocks in and 3 screws under steering column. 2 screws holding clocks in then pull it out. Don't let the clocks face down or it damages them. Takes 20 mins, cost £3

I had a mk3 TDDI which was one of the toughest diesels I ever owned. Loved that car.

Constant preventative maintenance on the rear calipers started to annoy me though.

When it came to change I couldn't stomach the common rail tdci

Saw one for sale about 6 months ago it had 320,000 on the clock. It was 03 i think so would be TDCI.

The caliper bit is annoying I agree there.
