The Perfect Motorway Muncher

Jesus. Shame the seller will undoubtedly be an absolute arse hole else I'd be all over that

I don't see why - looks like a Vel Satis that someone has turned up in to buy another car off the seller, who has taken it in part ex. I have bought a car on that basis before, and it's a good way to get something cheap because the guy just wants rid tbh!

Normal people don't take cars in part exchange - pikey driveway traders that claim to be private sellers do

Sadly that is how I see it too. Any driveway dealer knocking a car like that out for £verylittle means the car is borked IMO.. You're likely to be buying a heap of trouble.

I see - I guess I just got lucky with my experience then! That was a £200 car that the seller said he had agreed to take from the buyer of his 5 grand car. Nothing untoward or dodgy about that seller that I could see, I think he had just taken it in to seal the deal and get his BMW sold. TBH, for so little money, I might do the same! The car in question was probably worth about £700, and there was nothing wrong with it apart from a small flexi blow.

TBH, I don't agree, I've bought several cheapies off Gumtree, £200 - £300 motors that were worth about a grand. All required about £100 spending rectifying small faults like coils, wheel bearings, and new batteries. None of them was unreliable or a heap of trouble.

If I could get insured on a 3 litre Vel Satis, I would take the plunge @ £375, but that's just me!

Oh there's bargains to be had, from all types of seller! But I think I'd rather buy something like that from a private Joe, off his nice gravel driveway- rather than the guy who flogs untaxed cheapies from his council gaff. He just wants rid. Mind you, for that money it's worth a risk- it's just pocket money really..

Well yeah that's what I was thinking. Had it been £600+, I'd say give it a wide berth. But hey, it's a Renault Automatic Luxobarge  - not exactly going to be a paragon of reliability anyway!

Rover 75s are like a reverse tardis, look huge out side and are cramped and tacky inside. Your better off buying the corresponding 3 series.

Have you considered a 4 pot camry, a bigger more comfortable alternative to your Avensis?

Some excellent suggestions here. Thanks. Someone also mentioned the Polo 1.4 TDi. Manual and small but at 75mpg I might go and drive one.

Then I remembered for half of the outlay you can get into a similar engined Lupo. Either TDi or SDi.

It's hard. Anything under 50mpg isn't worth the hassle of changing really.

My Cadillac.

Too juicy?  What about a Transit?  I drive a last-of-the-old-shape 63 plate daily and although it doesn't go more than a few miles, I would happily take it to Inverness or Penzance.  Modern, diesel, manual, yes it's all those, all of which is unfortunate, but it's exactly comfy enough for the job without being so nice it sends you to sleep.  It also has enough power if you want to cruise at 70-ish (ossifer) and still overtake.  What the specific fuel figures might be I have no idea; no doubt Ford or What Van or some such will have data online.  Being a van, people will think you're at work so as long as you don't drive like it's an Audi, they will let you into gaps where appropriate.

Good shout getting into the older southampton built transits at work was like whacking on old worn in slippers, Quite baggy but very comfy good to drive good steering, nice old things.

Then they bought a load of the hateful portugese built new ones.. Hateful dash in your leg lower back crippling wank heaps!

Id say C5 Hdi.. pre dpf pre dmf but better spec than my old one with cruise and a 6cd at a minimum ;)
