Peugeot 206 SW anyone?

Local to me there's a Peugeot 206SW for sale, Quiksilver, 53 plate. All I know is it looks very tidy and it's got a long test. I'll get the number of anyone's interested.

Went round and had a pike at it. 2.0 HDI, recent clutch in it and service, new battery, tested until next May. Guy that's selling it said he'd been told the rear axle bushes were starting to go but it didn't merit an an advisory on the MOT. At £300 though what do you want?

If it's anything like a 306, the rear axle isn't an insurmountable task for the DIYer. Disconnect the brake pipes and the handbrake cables, 6 bolts through the boot floor holding it in, and the whole thing drops out.

The biggest problem with the rear beams is they have to get really bad before they fail an mot because they're so solidly bolted together with the torsion bars. Sounds ideal for a 'shiter, right? Well, yes but I can assure you that even a little wear in the trailing arm bearings causes the most unpredictable handling and sudden oversteer.

Honestly, not fun.

Good news is a fully rebuilt beam is now under £300 for most 90s Pugs, which is guaranteed to bless them with sweet handling once again!

love mine to bits, wish it was a diesel though. Thankfully by rear beam is unworn due to low miles, plenty of cheap parts on ebay due to so many made.

I had a 306 I bought in 2010 with 156k miles on it for £300.

It lived for 3 and a half years before going pop, good old turbo XUD running on silly boost and veg oil. Its rear beam was definitely on the way out, as the handling was definitely 'unpredictable' in the wet. Had some proper sideways moments of lift-off oversteer in it.

I always liked the shape of these, when I had my 3 door 206 I dreamed of upgrading to an sw.

not had that dream for a while though

At £300 though you are buying possibly a year to 18 months of motoring not a life partner. Once it started failing the test next May you would sack it off. £300 for 7 months motoring is nothing. It hadn't had an advisory on the last test for the bushes so could well scrape through another test. Spending £££ improving a £300 car is madness. In the meantime you'd be enjoying £10 a month tax and 50-6mpg. When May comes round stick it in for the test, if it wants £50-100 spending, spend it, if the axle is shot scrap it or move it on for spares for £150. At this sort of money you've got to manage it purely on a financial basis so long as it's safe.

I agree, but my point is, one with a worn beam is a total misery to drive and not a safe prospect if you drive faster than aunt Dorris. Sure, it's a bargain- the hdi is a gem- but mine were oh so keen to go backwards into the scenery when knack'd.

It's about their only major fault; I'd spend out on a rebuilt beam if the rest of the car is good, you'll get years more out of it.

Sheffield

Not too far from me, need to look into options for my Daughter, her 207 is suffering from 2 years of city commute, DPF clogged etc I think - may need a short term cover vehicle, will consult with her :)

No, it's Autoshite.

Not that the two terms are mutually exclusive, of course...
