Easy and bastard jobs

Commercial vehicles IMO should have their first MOT at a year old - some do a biblical amount of mileage and see stupendous abuse before they reach 3 years old!

Agreed. One of the vans at work is less than 3 years old and has nearly 130k on the clock. It gets serviced* at Halfords, the steering is a bit ropey on it, I keep mentioning it to managers but unless the wheels are about to fall off they're not bothered.

My Trafic failed its first MoT at 101,000 miles for knackered track rod ends and brake pads less than 1.5mm thick

Low mileage at 101k compared with some!

You need what lorry operators have to have, a page numbered defect book with duplicates, no harm in getting one from a suitable site yourself.

Writ the defect then sign date and time it, you keep a copy for your records and hand the others in.

See the difference in managers attitude when that steering problem they are then responsible for if the shit hits the fan..

I feel your pain! The safrane power steering was making off noises before i took out the engine. I am hoping this was the bodged high pressure line and not the actual rack itself cos if its the rack i'm in a similar shitty position as you. I could lower the subframe down instead but typically the front two bolts snap and cause even more hassle.

Easy job- front subframe on the Punto. Everything accessible, all captive bolts remained captive, it doesn't even have drop links.

Jobs that I wont do again so long as my arse points south

Front subframe on a Citroen BX

Bastard jobs that shouldnt be as difficult as they are;

Just about anything on the Stag, but notably head gaskets and removing / replacing the gearbox due to seriously obscured bolts

Easy stuff

Pretty much anything on the Range Rover Classic

Sparkplugs on a V6 4.0 Ford Explorer.

I took one look at 'em and got someone else to do it.

They look sodding impossible. I had platinums fitted.

The spark plugs on the 91 Oldsmobile Cutlass 3.1 V6 are a bugger.. At least the rear ones are. Needs ratchet straps to hoik the engine forward enough to get your hands in the near vicinity.

See also beetle ! Oh yeh the engine comes out in 10 mins - my big fat Arse it does !

I agree fully, 10 mins, I did it about 2 weeks and then broke an engine to transaxle mount which meant had to take the fucker out and get it repaired!!

I got offered a service job on a jeep V8 recently , the thought of removing 8 aged coil packs and old plugs and it all surviving was too much of a gamble so I binned it off

Easy: radiator on a Corsa B. 2 hoses, 2 bolts for the fan and 2 for the radiator.

Bastard: radiator in a Vectra B. There are 2 torx bolts hidden INSIDE the bumper, which has to come off as part of the process, one each side which are impossible to see and are about a foot long with a fine thread. So that's about half an hour scrabbling blind, turning the bastard things through about 90,000 revolutions.

I also got so pissed off trying to line up the new radiator with the air con condenser I ended up cable tying the 2 back together.
