1990 Mazda mx5 £950 FREE TRACKDAY

Keen readers will have noticed that I recently purchased a new mx5 so my trusty old one is looking for a new home.

I've owned this car for just under 4 years, in that time it has been amazingly reliable, all the more suprising as I have regularly "kicked the shit out of it" up at knockhill. To be more specific, I do maybe 5-6 trackdays a year, I made suitable preparations / modifications and kept right on top of maintenance. She may not be the quickest car on the circuit but in the twisty sections, I embarrassed a few of the big boys. You will not have more fun on track at this price range.

The bodywork looks spot on from a distance but there are a few scratches and scuffs up close. The passenger side front wing had a disagreement with a tyre wall down at Teesside autodrome and had to be reshaped from the inside - if you can find a wing in the right colour, it's a half hour bolt on job to fix - it's passed two mots since so isn't a priority to me.

There is currently a 2" hole in the front of the drivers sill, I'm not confident welding it myself but a patch shouldn't be a problem to someone (perhaps in Fife ?) that knows what they are doing.

Some technical stuff

1.6 115hp engine

custom Randall Cowel air intake (proper high pressure cold air from the scuttle panel)

stainless 4-2-1 jasma manifold

TORSEN limited slip differential (cost a fortune, makes a big difference on track / twisty back roads)

bigger 1.8 brakes, braided lines, brembo pads, fancy brake fluid

15" steel wheels with uniroyal rainsport tyres

power steering, leccy windows, cat1 alarm immobiliser with central locking

aircon removed because race car

cheap stereo with aux input

New soft top fitted last year with glass rear window and an autoshite dealer sticker :)

buy-it-now price of £950 includes an exclusive to autoshiters once in a lifetime deal of a free* two hour trackday at knockhill !

*free to you - I'll be paying for it obviously

car is currently taxed and insured so test pilots are positively encouraged - I know once you've had a go, you'll be away to the nearest cash machine

mot is mid September

the offensively loud exhaust, buckets seats and roll bar are no longer fitted, the interior is back to normal now but it is still a hoot to drive - come and have a go, fellow shiters :)

oh, and just one more thing.....pop up headlights !

Ooooh.

Can I assume that these are a quite a snug fit for the larger gent?

One of us is 6 4 tall, the other quite wide!

^^^^ They're fine for the lankier gentleman Will, I can testify to that. Width-wise it should be okay without the racing seats but that's more of a guess and I can't remember how much room the trans tunnel takes up.

Looks like the bug has bitten hard.

this is the trackday that I have booked - if the car hasn't sold, I'll go myself and have some fun anyway.

there are currently only 6 places available, I just spoke to them and they have five other mx5s booked so it's sure to be a good 'un :)

Bit more wishful thinking!

Although would be a starlet upgrade, plus it knows the way round knockhill!

the drivers seat has had a 'foamectomy' which involves the removal of some of the base and back cushioning, it doesn't affect comfort but as you now sit deeper into the seat, there is more room for the larger driver. I'm a short arse so did it as a budget bucket seat option which works well too :)

Have you stil got the offensively loud exhaust?

I was sitting at work on tuesday munching a tasty burger, idly checking the half dozen websites I seem to spend most of my time on. Clicking onto TrackScotland, I noticed they had a spare place on their trackday the next day. A quick text to one of my mates and a plan was hatched for us to split the cost and share the driving. :)

The front pads were a tad worn from the last track outing so on wednesday morning I jacked her up and stuck a fresh set on (admittedly not a brand I'd heard of before but I had them sitting in the garage so let's see if they are any good)

less than 100 miles and some serious fun :

amazingly, they performed very well, no fade, good stopping power, just not much in the way of longevity, we had to pack up and go home about 20 mins early :(

they are being replaced this afternoon for something a little better in advance of next Wednesday's session.

such a great little car, my mate Paul was amazed at how well a virtually stock mx5 performed on the track (he's a bit of a car nut, having owned a supercharged 5, a zetec westfield and currently a caterham)

little red Mazda has a new home - her new owner will be finishing off the welding and taking her back to knockhill for more trackday fun in the new year :)
