Checked the fluids this morning, coolant is fine and dandy. The oil level was low but had been since I got it, bought some Castrol GTX on offer at Tesco a few weeks back, now all topped up properly. Poor car had only driven to the MOT station and then to my house. Started first turn of the key though. Good little car :)

Golf used to transport me to St Albans and back today. Drives just lovely.

Only issue was a flickering of the oil can symbol on the dash at idle. I think the idle is a little slow. Plenty of oil.

Might benefit from a proper oil and filter change, plus a new oil pressure switch. Don't even know where it is located on the Golf.

Oh goody. Many switches to choose from. Yay*

Don't even know where it is located on the Golf.

In the vicinity of the oil filter, IIRC.

Ta muchly! Just got to figure out which type it is.

There's only 2-3 types across the entire Golf III range. Shouldn't need more than a quick look under the bonnet and 5 minutes on ebay to get a new one.

Finally managed to get some time on the Golf today. Had to take off the air filter gubbins to expose the location of the oil pressure switch which was on the left hand side of the cylinder head right next to an injector connector and spark plug. Came unattached with the help of a 22mm socket. New one on order, should be here on Thursday.

Need a bit of air in the front tyre too. Otherwise still a happy bunny :)

New one here, fitted to hand tightness 'cos can't find the fucking 22mm socket or the ratchet. Where the actual fuck?? I only had it 3 days ago FFS.

I have that issue. One minute it's there, next it's gone. Spent ages hunting the ten mil socket and spanner.

Posted

This is exactly why adjustable spanners were invented...

Posted

I have adjustables but because of the other gubbins in the immediate vicinity of the switch it is nigh on

impossible to get a meaningful turn going.

Managed to get the new switch nipped up properly. Still no sign of the socket and ratchet.

Put some air in the tyre :)

Starts the cars and........ the oil light is on all of the time now. WTF?? It was intermittent previously. It's the correct 1.4 bar (black) one too.

Duff sensor ? IIRC those act like an on-off switch, so bridging the terminals of the connector will tell you if it's a wiring problem.

Edit : forgot to say "VAG SHITE"

Dunno, it's a good quality brand new sensor.

Thread hijack... Sorry, but how is the Police car Mercury doing?

Miss the old girl and was just wondering.......

As you were.. Ahem

If it's the EA827 motor (1.6/1.8/2.0 non crossflow petrol, leans backwards in the engine bay) then these have oil pressure relief valve problems. The just get sticky with age. Drop the sump (piece of piss), unbolt the oil pump, strip it and clean it. Clean up the pressure relive valve with fine emery and the bore too. Reassemble and it should be okay. Or fit a new pump. The pump runs on the same shaft as the distributor IIRC so make sure to mark the rotor arm against the distributor body.

The engine bay pictures on page 2 suggest it's the crossflow Polo-type engine.

Not sure. It's a red oil can symbol, not flashing, just on all the time.

Clever AS people. I am likely to be driving this back to Accrington on Sunday.

One option is to take my chances

One option is breakdown all the way

Or preferred option is to fix it before driving home. I have never licked a golf so wouldn't know where to start

If I was to take bits down to fix it, what would I need?

Is it just case of try another sensor?

Or will I need to drop sump and clean it all out?

Any help/advice most welcome

22mm deep socket because I still cannot find the brand new one I bought especially for this job.

I wonder if someone nicked it whilst I was busy. Hmm......

I'm free Sunday and have a steel towbar or rope if shit comes to bust!

My mam got a brand new one of these as a courtesy car after a bump in hers. 'L' reg in white and bottom of the range. Because I was 19 at the time I flogged the tits off it continuously for about 2 weeks. It took a proper beating.

Just refitted the old switch. Normal service has been resumed.

Verdict: wrong or duff new switch/fickle car/it's Tuesday?

However, the exhaust centre section is now blowing but that is do'able.

Good to see that your experience of quality* aftermarket VW parts is the same as mine...

WINNAR !!!

Look after the bodywork and it's likely to last a thousand years.

Golf has reprieve!!!! I will do an oil and filter change when I get some cash, maybe lower the sump and give it a clean. Do these need a sump gasket or is it smidge of sealant?
