Anyone know anything about these 'fine Gallic beasties'? I have the chance of a one-owner '97 ZX Leader 1900D with 102k and FSH for beer money................I gather it's a 306 that's been hit with the ugly stick, beyond that I know nothing..... :P

Like any psa diesel, once all the plastic and trim has fallen off, the rest will go forever. As far as I know, heater matrixs (matri?) can be a problem, occasional wheel bearings and thats about it.Go for it!

I like the ones I've driven. Even with a n/a diesel they are quite perky, and the handling is excellent. Shame about the grim interior though

I believe they rust a bit more than the average 1990s French car. As with most PSA models from that time it's important to check that the rear wheels are vertical.

I've changed one of those, its not a bad job. Learnt to drive in one, drove it out of the 'rents driveway round round round bang into the front of the house :roll:

BTW the plural of matrix is matrices, at least that's what my school maths book told me.

Of course, How silly of me, I feel ashamed. :P

I loved the petrol 1.9i Volcane I had a few years ago...guess a non turbo 1.9 d will be a bit snail like but economical.

Yup, certainly make sure the heater works, and make sure you can live without the electric things that almost certainly aren't working...As you say, it's a shite Pug 306 really, so ace!If you think it's a bit sluggish, just be glad it isn't a diesel auto! They sold quite a few of those here...I had a NA diesel BX about ten years ago. Didn't strike me as particularly sluggish, but then I had only owned 2CVs and a knackered Skoda Estelle until that point...

Only had the petrol versions myself-great handling comfy cars which in my case never went wrong. Would have another without question-if its cheap enough and you need a car-get it. :D

Had 2, both 1900 NA dizzlers, Rotten inner wings, rotten front suspension legs, borked rear arm bearings, other than that they are slow, fugal and very comfy capable things.

Cheers guys....I'm going to have a look tomorrow, I shall keep you posted.....I need something pretty soon, but cheapness is even more of a priority, since next Tuesday I find out if I'm one of the 20% of our workforce being given his/her marching orders...What a great time to be alive. I haven't had this much fun since my grandad died.

Hey, these things are ace. I was supposed to get one before chrimbo, shame it fell through [cos elephant arsed up the insurance, mongz], though it did mean when pez prices dropped I ended up with my 'pimp' BMW  1900D is pretty slow, acceleration-wise, but wind them up and they cruise lovely. I rented one a few years back, can't really recall why, but it was ace for gobbling motorways and disgustingly frugal. The pez-power ones are a right lark. My mate had 2 Volcanes back to back, the last one being a 16v with a turbo conversion which was utterly utterly batshit mental. Soz re your job though. This whole recession lark stinks. Hopefully something will turn up though. Gotta be prepared for hard work though to get anything. All the interviews I've been for recently they've had like 200+ applications for each job. As per bloody usual with me though no sooner to I agree to one thing then a whole heap of other probably better opportunities present themselves.

It's advertised as a 1900D, but the pic of the engine shows what looks suspiciously like an intercooler sat on top. No 'TurboD' badges though. It's not all doom and gloom JUST yet.....I could be one of the 80% who get to keep their job, but then I have to stare a 5% pay cut in the face.Whatever I buy will be my only mode of transport for the forseeable future. Unless I end up working closer to home, in which case I'll give up and buy a step-thru chicken chaser.....

Decent cars.I had a TD 306 with the same [turbo'd] engine and it ran flawlessly while the rest of the car disintegrated around it. They can run on chip fat with the right fuel pump.Funnily enough my car didn't have any rot on it, and it was never garaged.... Why the ZX would be worse than the 306 in this regard I'm not sure.Don't they have that funny rear suspension that toes the rear wheels in a bit round bends? Did they all keep that sliding rear seat whatsit as well?Only thing I would recommend checking would be the price of the wiper blades. They can get quite expensive with postage and whatnot
