mk1 focus shite idle ?

Recommended Posts

got a mk1 1600 focus , all serviced up to date with genuine bits etc

the idle when hot sometimes hunts /fluctuates and generaly sounds like it wants to be a little bit higher than it is , with a/c or elecs on it starts to rattle the dash etc

ive cleaned the isv and replaced the pcv hose that fails on these ...any other ideas to sort it , should there be something that triggers a faster idle with the elecs on?

Consider removing the pipe from throttle body to air box (watch out for the clips, absolute sods to get back on - just remove at throttle body end) and clean the throttle body/butterfly valve. Pay particular attention to where the butterfly valve sits as there may be a build up there. NOTE - only use suitable cleaner as there is a coating on the throttle body that would be stripped by using carb cleaner type stuff. I think I used some Forte stuff.

You may be best to replace the idle control valve, cleaning doesn't always seem to work on these.

Did you replace/clean the PCV valve at the same time as the hose? They aren't dear if it comes to it.

If all else fails there is internet talk of an ECU update that may be of benefit, but that means a trip to Ford.

will look at isv prices ..seems all the ebay ones are for 1800/2000cc

Plenty of aftermarket valves on ebay:

I got mine through Ford Parts UK:

Sometimes the bit you want isn't listed, they'll have it, just email them. Mine was around £70 or so, but that was about 3 years ago.

ETA you may find this site useful too:

Also check the pcv valve and its pipework under the inlet manifold . Ive seen a few of these where the valve has failed and it sucks the pipe flat .

Mine did this, it was the throttle body wanted cleaning out. The idle control valve can also give similar trouble. Unlikely but the PAS has a regulator to adjust the idle but I'd doubt it's this as they rarely go wrong.

right ive ordered a isv , ight see if i can get the throttle body off , ive already cleaned what i could get at with the pipe off but might be some grot inside

It causes the problem around the butterfly as the carbon clogs it up so it doesn't sit right. I'd give cleaning the ISCV out a go first though. Might work. Don't lose the little metal gasket or the o rings. Takes 5 mins to do this job.

whats the score with  re setting the ecu so it can re learn

im seeing disconect the batt for anywhere between 10 mins and 1 hr

then what ....google brings up all sorts between let it idle and drive it about red lining it ???

how do i get that off??

There is a procedure for re-learning the idle values in the Haynes, I'll get it out later when I get home. Certainly doesn't involve redlining iirc.

The pcv valve just pulls out from under the inlet manifold. May be a bit tight but it will come. Just pushes in to refit.

You don't need to reset the ECU to change the ISCV. It's two 8mm bolts at the front of the engine... I'm lost as to why you'd start taking the battery out?

Posted

Disconnecting and reconnecting the battery resets the idle values on the ECU allowing it to relearn after work done. Not essential but worth considering where there have been issues.

Posted

I've swapped batteries dozens of times, never had to fuck about relearning stuff. Just hooked it up and then off I went. I'm half tempted to disconnect the battery and reconnect it as I've never noticed any difference.

Posted

Sure, you don't have to but when there are existing issues, why not?

id imagine say if theres an air leak or dud sensor the ecu knows this and is trying hard to compensate to make the engine run as well as it can , if i dont reset it then it wont know , or wont know for many miles vs reset it will re learn and hopefully run like new lol

right update time

new isv came today and fitted , throttle body off and cleaned , plus the already fitted breather hose ,batt off for the re learn and its idling nicer than before really smooth now

BUT

turn on the a/c and it drops the idle a good 100revs and the dash starts the shake etc...seems its not detecting the extra load and compensating for it

any more ideas please

Mine does exactly the same on occasion, theres not a lot else you could check off top of my head. Bit of a long shot but have you experienced the problem when driving or just at idle? Wondered if it could be a VSS related issue?

Posted

no the revs dont drop when driving

its already had the speed sensor last year

weekend bump

any more ideas please

idles perfect until theres an added load

Fuel pump? Mine did as you say and the fuel pumps failing. I tell a lie actually, I went out for pizza last night and the fucker failed on me. Still waiting for the pump to come from eBay. Cancelled the order getting one from ECP today to fit, can't wait any longer. I'll swap it and report back. Unlikely I know but you never know.

does yours do it all the time or just with accessories on?

When it's got all auxiliaries going lights etc. or occasionally just at idle. Can feel vibration through the steering wheel. If I was driving it every day it would piss me off. As it goes I just live with it in the absence of an idea of what might be wrong. I'm guessing the fuel pump as I know that's on its way out. Whether the two are connected I don't know. I'm extremely reluctant to start throwing money trying to find out as its a £500 snotter. I gave half a thought of flogging it and buying another I'd seen recently for £600 that's a really nice one. But I vetoed that as I'm a selfish bastard who'd sooner put it towards a car for myself.

haha yeah my steering wheel shakes like a mofo..its like uncle bucks car haah

id have thought a weak fuel pump would still provide enough fuel at idle if it can run the car at speed , but then what do i knowlol

Someone must have the answer to this!

Take the cap off the engine mount - the one directly on the timing belt side. Underneath there's a diaphragm like top, mine is slightly perished and feels soft when I press into it. I'm guessing this is an oil filled mount. Could this be the problem?

Posted

yeah i did wonder if tired mounts arent helping , but the revs simply shouldnt drop with the accesories on , should stay the same or raise a little bit and if you do rev it yourself its totaly smooth

bet its something silly

Mine never feels as if it's about to stall it just vibrates. Hang on I'll take a picture of what I mean...
