Tales of a Triumph Toledo

Phew, door worked perfectly on the key. It'l just be a connecting rod clip I imagine.

Started first turn of the key today :)

Those LED bulbs are nice and bright in the sidelights, a quite amazing difference.

I think I might like to try and get a proper Toledo steering wheel at some point.

The MGF wheels have all arrived, fitting will take place over the weekend :) Piccies to follow of course.

Finally got arse in gear and changed the wheelz over.

Obv there is no chrome wheel trim for these but that means 4 less things to lose and polish (in no particular order).

The ride height will settle with a bit of driving. This is normal.

Piccies now available 'cos we like piccies.

The underneathy bits look bloody stunningly good.

Tyre pressures were checked and adjusted, just in case you thought that I didn't.

I posted on the Triumph Toledo section of FB and a couple of people said that they had steering wheels for sale. I asked if they could PM me with details and price so on. Still waiting.

The Toledo/Dolomite were RWD, the Triumph 1300/1500 FWD

I'd love one of these, I think they look gr8. Didn't these come in FWD and RWD?

in the insanity that was the design office at Triumph they decided that the FWD was too expensive so went back to RWD as everyone else went FWD crazy. But personally I love RWD cars so works for me!

The FWD cars were quite interesting to drive but I do prefer the smaller engined RWD cars overall, especially the Toledo as it combines the rear end of the 1300FWD and the front end of the Dolomite. Win Win.

Someone on t'interweb said the colour of the car looks like Ford Olympic Blue. Would be handy if it is, always good to know the colour I guess.

Next on the list should be the bonnet release cable. That means next month will see the headlining painted.

It's all quite logical.

Left over from another job perhaps, good progress, looks tidy

1300 fwd box looks similar in design to saab 99's and  900's, not surprising as the early 99's had triumph engines anyway. Also probably why it couldn't really handle the 185bhp of my turbo 16S...though I did get nearly 140K miles out of it.

Got a 12v power supply socket thing from eBay, so in preparation for this I decided to get as much of the wiring in place.

Threaded the wires into the interior of the car with very little drama, wired in the in-line fuse, even used some of the trunking stuff I got for my Daf. No problem.

Just need to get some of the P clips I have in the garage with the Volvo and a few more decent electrical connectors and the jobs a good'un.

SatNav power here I come!

Thought the 1500 was both (i.e. 1500TC)

You're very much correct, I had forgotten about the TC.

Have been whiling away some time attempting to make the paintwork less rough and more shiney. It's still not great, lets be realistic here but it looks more presentable. Minor gripe though, the colour is not Ford Olympic Blue which is a shame, it is a few shades darker. Annoyingly the only option will be to take the car down to the paint shop and ask them to do a matched can.

The seats are coming up lovely and clean. The tyres are holding air. The chrome bits are looking very nice indeed.

I left a bottle of hand cleaner on the bonnet. This fell over and leaked slightly. It seems to make an excellent paint stripper.

A few people on the FB Toledo page said that they had a bonnet cable that they would sell but no-one ever gets back to me to sort out the details, same with a steering wheel. What is it with these people?

Posted

I had exactly the same on the owners website, often they had put stuff up for sale as opposed to my wanted ad but it made no difference. I think some wouldn't sell to a 'newbie'

Would one from another car do for the time being?

To be honest mate, it isn't a huge hassle. I'll just leave the bonnet unlatched for now. Not like it's going to fly open :)

A lot of Spr*nt owners do that anyway.

Front seats 95% cleanerer now. The real parcel shelf is half done, very ingrained stuff came away quite easily. Bloody good stuff is Cif.

I drove her out of the garage (she started first time)as it wasn't raining and gave her a wipe over. Looks nice, that blue does really suit the car. I just wish I actually knew what the colour was.

The finish on the roof is truly dreadful and beyond compounding. I think that a vinyl wrap is the only real way forward, or painting it white I guess.

A good day spent Toledoing.

Posted

Not a fan of 'em. See too many with rusty blob shaped bulges underneath that make crunchy sounds when pressed.

The vinyl wrap will be easier to fit and replace if need be. Plus you can get some funky designs ;)

Posted

I guess it can't be that hard to put some vinyl wrap on the roof. I might give it a light sand to even it all out first.

Probably a 2 person job though.

I have been fertling in the garage today after a couple of bits whilst prepping the dolomite for Monday's MoT and came across this:

post-19712-0-35754300-1466269406_thumb.jpeg

It's a release cable for a plumbed in fire extinguisher. Would it be any use as a bonnet release cable for your tolly?

Ooooo, that does look doable :)

How lengthy is it? Not that I know the length of the one in situ :)

How much pre-MOT fettling was there on the Dolly?

Long enough to do the job with some to spare if needed, spray the end black (o er missus) and it would look pretty close to original, I can stick it in the car for next week if it's of use to you.

The brakes needed another bleed, couple of bits of paint underneath to neaten stuff up then spent a couple of hours on the Capri. Found the cable in my cable and tube box, everyone needs one.

That would be fantastic mate, looks like it could be a winnah! Paint the end? nah, looks ace as it is :) Thanks a lot mate, much appreciated. This forum eh? :)

So all ready to go then? Sounds like it! :)
