It's something to do with the construction of the screen - under certain light conditions you can see these shapes. I think it might be more noticeable in laminated screens. Probably something to do with the light being polarised as it passes through, or affected by ghosts. Or something.

If you look at the screen when wearing polarising shades you might see the patterns change or disappear (or if you're unlucky, you'll just see the faces of the dead looking back at you*).

 

*Note: You don't need the shades to see this effect when driving through Eastbourne.

I think so.  Gaston's car is the ongoing object of many jibes and sarcastic comments throughout the series.

its toughened windows that  exhibit this, during the 70's it was more noticeable on front windscreens as a striped effect (triplex zebrazone) as fewer cars had the more costly laminated glass than nowadays
