There's something about a 2.9 that really appeals. Where abouts is this at garbaldy?

You should have kept your 2.5 Senator and raced them, all you'd need for the slowest cars of 87 grudge match would be a Rover 820SE( single point) auto.

I've never owned one either, but I have driven a few, both pre-and post-facelift.  I always thought they felt better-made than an Escort (here's probably the only place I could say such a thing!).

As a previous Escort owner I would fully agree.

If he wants to see that Jag he should put it on XJ40.com

I have just bought an old copy of car mechanics from March 1997. They had a 2.9 XJ40 as a project.

The 2.9 has 165 bhp. Essentially it looks like half a V12 - I am certain it has a V12 rocker cover.

Timing chains are the biggest problem.

For £600 i'd be in for this if my garage was'nt full of SD1.

What is it with povo spec cars that appeals?

My 3.2 auto had 195bhp & that was only enough power. I bet the 2.9s feel slow as hell.

It's not quite perfect but ticks quite a few of the essential boxes, for maximum wrongness you really need an early model with the troublesome electrics, 2.9, cloth trim, hupcaps, manual gearbox, flat red paint...all the hallmarks of a Jag bought new by someone who had probably worked hard and saved up for years so they could just afford a new one.

Funny, saving up to buy a new, aspirational car like a Jag seems to be a thing of the past.
