504 sounds like a tractor and drives likes a Diesel Maxi, but it did bring us home. 504 never die!

Didn't post-1986 Turbo Injections have 180 horsepower instead of a 160?

To my knowldege:

1984 - 1985 N9T 150 hp

1986 - 1987 N9TE with intercooler 160 hp. 150 hp with cat.

1988 models (built Sep 87 onwards) N9TEA 180 hp

Pretty sure this is correct for the german market, maybe different for other countries.

The car we looked at is from May 87 and has a cat, so actually 150, not 160. Papers of the car confirmed that.

No collection :(

Was there anything wrong with the 505 or was it just you not wanting it?

the car was as described, in good nick, and fairly priced.

Test drive was the decision point, nothing obviously wrong with it, starts fine, runs smooth.

I have never driven a 505 Turbo before, but it was dissapointing.

I don't know if it was this particular one or if perfomance of this engine in general isn't any better.

It didn't "feel" to perform much better than the 505 SX i owned  before (120 PS injection, no turbo).

It certainly didn't manage to give me that grin in my face and perception of unlimited acceleration of the Tagora SX, maybe i am just spoiled by that. My friend felt the same.

The body kit spoils somehow the generally nice look of a 505 and makes it look a bit silly, but that was not the decision point.

So, at the end it was a no.

The car is advertised here: http://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/details.html?id=224621573

If somebody is interested i can give you ample details about the car and get you in touch with the owner.

Was the turbo working? If it didn't feel better than a non-turbo 120PS maybe not.

The bodykit may divide opinion but it does look a good example.

The turbo gauge was moving, if that has any meaning ;-)

Turbo was replaced some 80000 km ago.

It is an original factory option, and somehow typical for it's time, i would have kept it on the car.

The rear lights are phase one (phase two car), only bit that is not original.

With all that money you saved, perhaps you could go and get a 505 V6 instead?

Never say never....

Is that a German vanity plate of the 505 Turbo?

Yes.

German numbers always start with 1 to 3 characters indicating the town the car is registered at. We were in Bielefeld, hence BI.

The numbers and letters that follow are your choice but have to be one or two characters followed by a number of up to 4 digits.

04/09 means it is only taxed April to September. You can tax a car "part time" here, but have to keep it on private grounds during the non taxed period.

Contrary to the nonsense going on with vanity plates in the UK (which nobody outside your country understands, why do people pay 100000 to put something like GWRTZTE or HWRGFE on their car???), you simply pay a nominal fee (~15€) to get a vanity plate here.

Note that german numbers dont stay with the car for live. Numbers may change when you sell the car (new owner has the option keep it but only when registered in the same town) or move to another town (since last year you can keep the plate if you move).

As others have suggested the next move has to be a 505 V6 then you'll get that glorious PRV noise

... well, no lack of PRV's here, they all sound great!

still, nothing wrong with adding a 505 V6 as long as you explain it to Mrs. pshome

I had that same feeling when I tried a 405 Mi16. I couldn't notice any difference to my 2.0 8-valve.

^^^^  I was disappointed with the BX GTi 16V I had many moons ago. And i got that to replace a 19RD Estate.

I have no doubts that it's a brilliant engine but it just didn't feel that quick. Fast but not quick if that makes any sense at all.

I suppose you need to wring out every last rpm to get the full 16V effect but a combination of too much mechanical sympathy/nails down a blackboard/I'm a pussy means I very rarely venture above about 4000rpm. In fact whilst chatting to Moog last month I realised that I've never hit a rev limiter in 23 years of driving.

You have to belt the living shite out of an Mi16 to make one move. 'Psycho scally' doesn't fit most folk's driving style.

See also: VW Golf GTI 16v.

If you have any mechanical sympathy it feels wrong.

The point where an 8 valve XU would be crying enough is about where an Mi would start remembering its purpose in life.

They're very peaky and don't really feel like other XUs. I hated engines like that for years until I started driving faster 16v stuff.

Want something that's the best of both worlds? I recommend a supercharged F20C (modified Honda S2000) or an MGF VVC; peaky engines with some discernible bottom end.

Nothing wrong with torquey 8 valve engines but if you're used to the latter (which I was) the former feels very weird.

Checked the 504 today, it's the waterpump. Bearing dead, making the noise and stalling the engine when idling.

No big deal, easy to replace.

504's never die!
