Too low?

To me, this is low in a daft stylee, but am I just being a victim of my advancing years?

What do you think? My 17 year old son says it's 'boss'!

Not my bag at all. Quite like the low look, but the ridiculous camber just makes it look like a silly object rather than a car.

For most cars (and some commercials) a little bit of lowering is no bad thing in my eyes. However unless that thing is on some sort of adjustable hydraulic/air suspension, it must be practically undriveable, and whats the point in that? :lol:Incidentally, its always struck me how similar the Trabant side window shapes/door frame are to those on old Minis

I think its ridiculousness is the best thing about it. It is a silly object. Just one that happens to drive. :D

Don't like it at all, do they not have speed bumps where the car is from? I don't ever see lowering a s a good idea. I know you don't modify/customise to be piratical, but unless you are building a trailer queen what's the point if you can't drive it far?

I can appreciate the looks, doesn't mean I want to own one.I call it the Citroen DS effect.

Posted

Not really my sort of thing really. I don't mind stuff being lowered but thats a bit too low to be practical.

]Well, the lad's from Poland.Having been there I can tell you that their roads are worse than the roads in Cheshire. So like a fucking bomb site.He must drive VERY slowly indeed. Mind you, a 601 Trabbi isn't gonna be breaking any speed records.....perhaps that's the point we're missing - the car is embracing its languidness.

If I hadn't seen that vid I'd have sworn that Trabby was photoshopped ... Bet it drives like a pig

Nothing beats a well 'slammed' retro .Bit of satin black slap and some split rims and it'll be the shizzle!

Has this place always been a bit "let's slag off what's on Retro Rides" or is a recent thing? Can't say I like that attitude much. Live and let live!Sure, I don't always get the point of slammage, but I'd rather some people chopped out coils and tweaked down the torsion bars than have a field full of bog standard stuff. Variety is the spice of life!

Well, sit down I have a rant. Why is it nearly every car on RR starts out a fantastic untouched example of whatever it is, then inevitably ends up slammed? Is that not samey? Can't they leave the feckers alone? If it was meant to have it's arse scraping in the ground, Ford/Vauxhall/citreon/mercedes or whatever would have made em that way. Do we not have speed bumps in this country? Everywhere?I feel better now...

Live and let live indeed, so leave my thread alone! I think RR is losing its way, too many slam it on its arse projects materialising. I simply don't see why an old car has to be mutilated to be called retro.

I think it looks shite, personally, but then it's not my car.

Retro Rides is a forum for folk who like modifying cars. That's where it came from. Yes, it's very welcoming to those who like stock as well, but if you don't like it, it's probably best to stay away from that site...I don't really care for banger racing, so I don't go to banger racing forums. Works quite well for me!

Thanks god, not just me then. Thought I was getting old.....

Hear hear Dolly!Fred, if you're going to modify something it often helps to start with the best example you can afford/find so you don't have to do all that restoration stuff first.I dare say there are people who look at my Minx and wonder how I get over speed bumps etc but then I've modified it to make sure it can, as its our everyday family car. You either "get" this kind of messing about with cars or you don't and if you don't then its unlilkely you ever will - I'd certainly never try to "convert" anyone. No point slagging them off though.

But theres low and LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWW, the first being your splendid Minx, and the second being daft, frankly. But hey, whatever.

Well yes, there is going too far, as there is with anything. I'm sure most classic car enthusiasts would consider us going too far getting wet about a Hyundai Pony or Datsun Cedric. If we were all the same, the world would be a bland place.

Thank you but I like daft :D:wink:

I dont really mind if I cause offence by saying that looks ridiculous. When that drives down the street, everyone will laugh.I'm all for modding cars, I do it myself, but that just looks contrived. Unless its on airbags, I'll give it a few weeks before its shagged. The above served up with an extra portion of IMO on the side.

At least here you can freely say it looks ridiculous. If you uttered anything other than gushing OTT compliments over there you'd soon be pointed towards the forum by-laws!There are some cracking projects over there that haven't involved wasted mahoosive modifications on an otherwise decent car.

With both my cars I've had endless people asking when I'm going to "slam it". The answer is I'm not to either of them. There's nothing wrong with going lower, but too low looks daft, destroys tyres, makes the car unusable and buggers up suspension geometry. The car in the first post just looks ridiculous, it's like the suspension's collapsed

I suspect this is one of the good things about owning a modified Rangie. No-one expects it lowered.Unfortunately, the Landie 'scene' seems to think it needs a 3" lift. Then again, it whooped the arse of a fair few Landies and Rangies which had 'suspension improvements' when it was off road, then did it again on the way home.I really must get it back on the road soon.

I do find that Trabant to be aesthetically pleasing, in a weird-caricature-sort-of-way. However, there are two things about it that I do not like (warning : rant ahead !)...The first is the obvious fact that it's not driveable. I'm sure that the suspension travel and geometry would test the patience of even the greatest masochist, and any significant amount of road use would lead to the whole thing falling apart due to material fatigue. And what's the point in owning a car that you can't drive ? I'm sure that many people would disagree with me (the detailing/concours/upmarket classic people, for instance), but I believe that cars are meant to be driven, and anyone who turns them into a static display is completely missing the point. The second thing I don't like about this car, is that it seems to be following the latest modifying fashion/scene, which dictates that all a car needs is lowering and a change of rims. It certainly is a nice, easy way to make an ordinary old car look sporty. But what about performance ? What about individuality ? I could be wrong, but it seems to me that the whole thing is becoming a new 'Dub' scene, or -dare I say- a low budget alternative to the MaxPower scene !!!Now, there has been quite a bit of criticism against RR lately, which I think is wrong. The people that run that forum seem to be moving towards a 'scene' direction, with which I don't necessarily agree. But it's their forum, not mine, and they have made it clear on several occasions that they will run things their way, which I think is fair enough. And while the amount of slam&rimz cars is on the increase, there's no denying that the readers' rides section is also packed with lovely executed, innovative car builds, which every real car enthusiast should find appealing !

I always though a forum was a medium for open discussion and voicing of ideas, hardly open when you can't say anything negative is it? I once had a thread pulled because I slated something I'd seen on barryboys! Yes there are some decent posters with proper cars over there, our own bo11ox amongst them but it just doesn't seem the same anymore. My 17 year son old now spends more time there than I do, says it all really.
