Are you a Swedeaephile? Talk to me about phase one V70s.

I've been thrown a curved ball. With the my other half due to relocate bloody miles away soon, I want something more up to the job of doing lots of long motorway slogs. My Rover 800 isn't up to it, and there's no way I'm going to drive it into the ground - so it's going (FUCKSAKES!!!) or it will be getting a new friend.

I'm very keen on V70 phase ones. I'm not into phase twos (yes, I have driven one, quite a lot) I don't like them all that much and decent ones are just out of my price range anyway.

What goes wrong on phase ones? Will one be more or less likely to bite me in the arse than an 800 after El mucho motorway? Are they expensive to have fixed? Are they bastards?

All opinions and experiences appreciated!!!

163hp dizzer goods as lacks emissions crap that later dizzers have

Auto box dodgy as nobody changes the fluid.

Apart from that, pretty solid all round, great seats, heating and sound system.

Isn't a v70 ph1 an 850 with a different badge?

I like my 850, much comfy and many fasts

I started my Swede search looking for an 850 or a good phase 1 V70. The phase 2 is a far more complete car in my view.

But they look like Catalinas and have the turning circle of an Australian road train. Plus, they're too modern for me.

They are similar mechanically but don't share many body parts.

TDI is frugal and punchy but make sure both the belts have been done. Mine had relatively low miles but suffered from skimped maintenance.

Common problems on them are mostly minor niggles really.

I like the newer shape V70s but they aren't as sharp to drive as the 850/x70 and they are electrically complex.

Proper square V70s were good to drive when new (I worked at a dealers back then), much much nicer cars in everyway than the later ones. Never understood how a silly shape that made it harder to park, feeling (or was) slower & a less pleasant interior was an upgrade.

I sourced a TDi for fatha-fdb a year ago and it's been superb. Characterful with an old-fashioned quality feel. It's an auto and even when I use it, 45mpg is an easy average. Fast on a motorway (rather too keen to zoom off into three figures), the engine makes itself known accelerating at lower speeds and feels slower than it is. If a box is knackered it will be slow and have poor mpg, too. This one overtakes slower traffic effortlessly. Good seats and radio, too.

It's at its worst on lumpy back roads with poor surfaces and foundations, the ride's a bit sharp over ripples and ridges and can feel out of character with the rest of the car. The 195/60 tyres (even though almost new) feel as if they're too small with too little air inside them, to be replaced with 195/65s or 205/60s when they eventually wear. This car has had four new dampers not so long ago, I've yet to see who made them.

5-speed autos need v expensive ATF, I think they appeared on MY2000 cars. Petrols have expensive under-bonnet stuff added about 1998, which fails. Rot doesn't seem to be something to worry about. Access under the bonnet is good on this diesel, although alternator replacement meant tilting the engine backwards off its mounting. Diesels will run happily on a high veg% mix, though they prefer to start (and stop) on diesel.

I would say a Ph2 V70 is a more complete car, and they come in X-plated form if anything with a new-look number plate is too frightening.

You can also get Ph2s with the ancient 2.5TD engine from the Ph1.

EVIDENCES.

However, to be more helpful, any Swedish barge is going to swallow up miles like a nommy mile nomming machine. This is mostly achieved by having the bestest seats evAr. I cannot speak for the Ph1s, but get a Ph2 with the 16" wheels and it'll cruise at 65mph in utter silence.
