HELP ME! Car buying question.....

Recommended Posts

Posted

I'm planning on buying a car tomorrow.

Its chuffing miles away so the plan would be to drive it home. The question is... How?.... Legally....

Its at a dealer so assuming I want it, can I;

1. Ring my insurance company and insure it.

2. Tax it immediately using my phone/dealers interweb.

3. Pay and drive home.

Are there any logistical issues with this?

How quick does the insurance database update?

It updated slowly when I bought my van, but as long as you have proof of insurance you should be fine, i.e. a printout of the certificate or a copy on your phone.

If you're driving home during sensible hours, just keep the insurance company's phone number handy. That, plus a receipt for the car should make it fairly easy to believe your story and phone the insurer. If you've got a smartphone, get them to email the covernote and save it to your phone.

Tax online using your phone too, really shouldn't have any problems assuming the car isn't a deathtrap that's going to get pulled regardless.

How do you tax online if you've only insured it 5 mins previously?? I thought the online tax thingy checks its on the MID before it lets you have some ticket?

tax, mot and insurance are no longer reliant on one another. do them as you need.

Ask the dealer to put it on their insurance temporarily to let you tax it. They can take it off again before you drive it away.

I'm sure tax is still reliant on MoT and insurance is it not?

No, the Gov are more than happy to take your money any time, they don't make anything from mot's or insurance companies.

Only five years ago, Norwich Union did a free 7 day driveway insurance if you got a quote of them. I bought a Laguna II V6 at 19 years old, my quote from them was £12k, but they still covered me for 7 days for getting a quote. And of course, the months tax still left was mine. Made taking a trip over to the mainland to find something for an epic drive home much easier. Those days are sadly gone, glad I got a wee taste of them tho. Enjoy the new wheels.

eBay Motors used to offer free 7 day insurance via Norwich Union as well.

This facilitated my addiction to buying the cheapest cars possible in a 400 mile radius for a while.

I think the insurance requirement to get tax died when tax went monthly, too hard to constantly be verifying insurance status (especially when it can take 14 days to show) every month before taking another payment.

Deffo still need an MOT, but not insurance to tax online, done it recently x2.

Last time I went to a post office I offered the bloke the MOT but he wasn't interested.

It's done electronically. When I was last in this boat I noticed the new MOT on the system before the garage had rung me to say it was done :)
