Rather tragic isn't it that the pinnacle of ride refinement and comfort occurred forty years ago.

Yeah I realised I'd missed my car's 40th a couple of years ago. Then I missed its 45th, so I'm sitting here waiting for its 50th next year. I should check when that is or I'll miss that too. Looking forward to it though, I'm going to get absolutely fucking bollocksed.

Even more tragic is that it was put to rest forever ten years later.

Happy birthday 604.

It'll be able to have another present in March too by joining the ranks of tax exempt classics!

Blimey - three short weeks from factory to registration!  My Dyane left Levallois-Perret in January 1982 and wasn't registered until October...

I don't think that this is true.

It says here https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-exempt-from-vehicle-tax that "You don’t have to pay vehicle tax on vehicles made before 1 January 1975 (known as ‘historic vehicles’)."

So at some point this will hopefully click over to "vehicles made before 1 January 1976", does this happen in March?

But then it still will not qualify because 27th Jan will be after 1st Jan.

I think that I have to wait until next year and just hope that the rollover will be continued, and my understanding is that there is no guarantee that it will be.

it says here http://classics.honestjohn.co.uk/news/general-news/2014-03/classic-car-road-tax-exemption-now-rolling-at-40-years/ that it is now rolling and from from 1st April 2015 that cars made before 1 Jan 1975 will get historic tax, so it follows that from 1 April 2016 you get historic tax for a car made before 1 Jan 1976, which the 604 isn't, even though it is already over 40 years old.

That seems ridiculous to me.

It is actually a 41 year rolling exemption isn't it?

As an apprentice at a Peugeot garage (Hall Brother's Motors of West Ruislip),which would have been

Dieselnutjob's local one, I used to PDI these. Along with fitting the bolt on hub caps and number

plates the o/s mirror came in the boot, the n/s was an option extra and had to have holes drilled

in the door for the captive nuts. Being a new driver it was great to drive these and 504 TIs.

Yes.  This means the Exchequer "gains" approximately an extra £0.53 per annum.

Usual story: heads they win, tails you lose.  Because politicians.  And general apathy elsewhere.

In April cars built before 1st Jan 76 will become tax exempt. However yours wasn't first registered until 19 Feb 76, so it's entirely possible it was actually built some time well before that? You'd need proof of this to get the exemption (from Peugeot?)

I got my 74 Capri changed to tax exempt in April last year, as it was built before 1st Jan 75.

Your problem this year will be actually proving the date of manufacture. I think only certain sources are acceptable for this, ie the manufacturer or an owners club.

It's possible I jumped the gun on it though, assuming 1976 automatically meant it'd be exempt from April. So sorry for getting your hopes up!

but I don't really understand what it means

What it means is rather than change the primary legislation to make the date rolling, they have to remember* to shove a clause in the Finance Bill for that year (Budget). As soon as the government of the day forgets* then the rolling grinds to a halt.

We should start a petition.

Or twelve.
