I must confess that while I would never have thought of it, that 65K mile Vectra with the 12 stamps does look very good indeed.  Astonished.

This is my specialist subject as I do around 80--100k miles a year , currently in a W211 e280dizzler.

I would say there's very little difference between an e39 or W210 as far as motorway slogging and I wouldn't be too specific, just find the best looked after least rusty one you can find regardless of if it came from Bavaria or Stuttgart.

Dome's Merc, would , I think, be worth a stretching your budget a bit for, just because of the work he's done on it.

Don't dismiss smaller engined versions either, post 2001 525's go well enough and even 220 Mercs will cruise all day at 100, and they're good for 500,000 before they need a service!

Yep, can vouch for the S211 E220CDi being acceptably brisk and frugal. Great seats, small wheels, comfy as you like. Cost me £3k for a 56-plate.

Do you mean tramping in the HGV sense of trunk work stopping in the back of it overnight?

Depends how bad traffic gets lol.

Ive seen a 530D touring, on a Y plate. Its got no MOT and hasnt had one for 12months or so. I test drove it on saturday and it was suprisingly good. Seen a few noisey ones but this one seamed good. Only 112k on it too. Im going to make him an offer, but theres no way im paying the 1450 he wants for it, with no ticket!!

I'd ask why it hasn't seen the road for 12 months. Trouble with a 530d is that it could be seriously expensive to put right if it's got some issues - possibly the ones that meant it's been out of action for a year. At £1450 he's having a laugh, a tenth of that would've realistic with no MOT. If you want my two penneth I'd say if a grand is your budget I'd suggest something like an older Vectra DTI or a 406 HDI. Bmws and mercs at this money are usually hanging, you might drop lucky but then on the other hand you might get your fingers burnt. If it's a diesel you want don't spend more than what you can afford to lose as any fuelling, DMF, turbo problems and will mean you'll have to sack it off and start again.

You didn't mention how many miles a year you'd be doing, so difficult to advise when you could be looking at only a few K, therefore a high miler would be fine, or loadsa miles, in which case you'll need a car that has had less of a hard life, and I'm shocked you're considering a car out of test at all, never mind 12 months - I'd be offering not far off scrap money, if at all

Good luck mind you, and don't write off the people carrier option for towing and comfort, and easier to get an auto also.

finally, never had one, but a jaag x-type estate can't be far out of budget, for something different?

The guy has two identical 530d on his driveway, along with some modernish shite to go with them. Hes 62, and does a bit of buying and selling...only the last few motors that got bought, became driveway ornaments. My plan was to buy both cars, and have the second as a spare....for when the road goer dies and I need parts. Hes in dream land, I offered 1600 for both but he is stubburn and they will still be parked gathering moss in another 12 months.

Tomorrow im going to look at a 525d touring just up the road.... Same colour and spec as the last two (only it has black leather not cloth). Its done 200k and has lots of MOT. asking 1100, might get it for less....depending on how desperate he is to sell and how desperate I am to buy. I still dont want to loose my ST, but needs must.

It doesnt brake down anymore. I promise. Slave only failed when towing, so had the complete clutch and flywheel etc etc replaced. Love this car.

SO. The saga continues.

I looked at a 525d touring on wednesday. Up for 1100. Found a bad oil leak. Told the bloke about the previous TWO id been looking at and that if possible I'd come back at the weekend to see where the oil is coming from. He was a nice gent.

So i rang the old boy selling both 530d's. Told him 1000 for the Y reg....... He replied with "i want to sell both". He wanted 1800. I agreed and told him I'd ring back this weekend.

And I did just that. Phoned up today to seal the deal and guess what. He's changed his bastard mind. Wants to put them both back on the road himself. Utter twatbollocks. SO, I ring back the bloke with the 525d........ Sold it yesterday.... FCUKSTICKS!!!!

Is there anyone near ORPINGTON that can have a look at this for me?

In a word; don't.

I've been there, done that.

Dizzler auto, that was a world of aggravation and expense.

Shame, as it was lovely to sit in.

No intention to put them back on the road - he hopes you will offer more money.

Hopefully in 18 months time a strong breeze will blow the remnants away.

I still think an 850 or x70 with the 5 pot VAG unit would do the job. Like all tough cars they can be 'let go' a bit, but there are good ones out there.

A Toyota Avensisis probably better put together than any of the shonky beemerz you have been looking at.

One here has 114k on it and is probablly good for a lot more.

Those D4D Avensis are good cars as well. A friend had a D4D Corolla which he professed was 'the best car in the world' - he upgraded to the Avensis needing a bigger car to tow with. It's on well over 200k now.

Id love an 850, or an early v70.... but find me one. One thats auto and diesel. I cant find any for sale anywhere! :(

well found that man. Every search ive made on there has been useless. weird. Will watch it. Too far to just go and view so if it stays cheep i'll have a cheeky bid.

I agree, ebay's search engine can be notoriously fickle. Worth going round the houses to see what it doesn't want to show you.

I do not like the avensis - any car that makes a diesel mondeo feel like a veyron must be shit.

I think my MK3 Astra Estate is wonderful. Just need to sort the engine out.  :-(

The avensis is manual anyway so its no good really.

I like the volvo. Its near Gatwick. Shame. 400 mile round trip. Yikes

X type Jags rust as badly as an XJ6 series 2.

I looked at a 04 one, it had air for sills.

I hear your pain brothers, be dumb not to take note :-D

off to collect one on Saturday :-P

...........just kidding, can't afford one, and I am pretty daft when it comes to vehicles

Ps good luck Op, wcpgw?? :-D

Also went to see a '55 plate X-Type which had needed welding for its MOT.

A bit disturbing in this century for prestige mark to require that after just 10 years.

Talking about X types, we had one in work due to a dodgy MOT put on it by a tester up north........ No sills, and the rear axle mounts were almost missing. YIKES
