Thought I would follow this up, incase it helps anyone here.

Well the 205 proved pretty much impossible to insure, so its for sale and a modern Citroen C1 has been bought.

This meant I could get a quote of "just" £1050, which all things considered is better than expected. Went with Ingenie who are targeting 17 to 25 year olds...

I ran quotes for my 17yr old daughter on the Metro with a provisional licence last night.

£450 fully comp, no black box with Flux. Adding myself made zero difference.

No security, road parked, commuting and no safety but a seatbelt.

Insurance makes no sense or nuffin.

You will probably find no one will cover it once she passes her test as a few of us have found out. Modern cars aren't much fun but for youngsters they need one to get that first year of insurance under their belt then they stand a chance of getting insurance on a classic

Just added 19 year old daughter to 2001 Mini Cooper as Named Driver from Today until end of September (6 months less 2 days) .  Â£269 extra, plus excess is £650 instead of £150.

Which bodes well, because I'll probably add her for 2 more years, after that, for an extra £500 a year, and then we might give her the car on her graduation.

Have you priced up cost, once the test is passed ? The only reason I wouldn't go for a black box to reduce the cost is that it defeats the point of the Cooper. I mean, if they measured some of the cornering forces I've achieved (when alone on a country road I know well), they'd probably just cancel the insurance there and then.

The Prostitute of Advanced Mentalists test thing used to bring it down a fair bit. Dunno if it still does.

Looked into advance driving qualifications and it makes little difference. Annoying as I have a Institute of advanced motorists grille badge already on the Ovlov.

that seems like a great quote for a 17yo,i would seriously look at your 205 but as always its a distance thing

£1200 with full licence on same details. That sucks.

My first car was a Fiesta 1100 Pop Plus at £450 in 1992.

The future sucks. Insurance companies suck. Litigation society sucks. Shareholders suck.

Don't know this is still possible but when I was a younger man I stumbled across a loophole. I was posted abroad and parked my car (a Mahindta btw) in the garage and told Direct Line. The agent suggested keeping the insurance running but removing "road use" from the policy. That meant a 90% refund and I'd still earn NCB! Came back later with 2 more years NCB for little cost. So, presumably 17 year olds could buy a banger...park it in a field...insure for buttons non road use....and build up ncb.

That seems a pretty good price to be honest

I get about 5-10% off car and the 10% off bike insurance being an IAM member (done both car & bike advanced) so it is worth it but don't bother with their own insurers, I've never had a decent quote out of them in over 25 years.

Don't know anything about 'Pass-Plus' but this is supposed to help lower premiums isn't it? Although I read it's generally a bit crap in practical terms.

The way forward for youngsters is to get a really unfashionable car, yes, I know everyone wants a trendy car, a Bini or the like but put up with the piss-taking for a year or so and build NCD, then you can move on to something more interesting. A 205 is a good car (have one) but any hatch of that ilk is going to be pricey to insure irrespective of engine size as they are popular with the young.

Pass Plus was useful for me, albeit over 10 years ago, it reduced my insurance premium by around £300 and taught me a few useful tricks like reading the road.

There's practically no darkness in northern Scotland in mid summer and the nearest motorway is nearly 3 hours away so those parts were theoretical.
